Depress the starter button before the key switch is turned on which cuts out the headlight circuit , turn the bike on with your left hand, then pull in the clutch lever to start the bike. It becomes automatic after a while and you don't even think about itVery clever! http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_clap.gif
In all the reading up I have done re installing HID's, I can not recall anyone providing such a simple answer to the problem

Because the voltage on some bikes isn't up to standards during start up required for the Hid's. This is lorne area so i'll let him explain my situation. I have a secondary switch on mine to turn the headlights on and the highbeams work on the Oem setup.

so, again, the lights take an extra second or 2 to turn on, why is that a big deal? i had them on my R1 and it never bothered me.

It's not the extra seconds you're trying to avoid - it's the double light on switch within a short time that messes most HID systems up.
I have my HIDs wired through my switch. I do not have a delay (although I bought one) and don't feel the need for one. I just wait 30 seconds before I hit the starter button.
My HIDs have a lifetime warranty so I'm not too concerned about it because I know of some riders who's been using my particular brand for 4-years without a relay or issues.
