The 848 was sold last night. The new owner said he'd had an R6 prior, but he just called me to tell me that the bike wouldn't start. For background, we bought a new battery from L'Ville Cycle Gear yesterday. It was fully charged, and the bike started beautifully. I've never had any issues with the bike starting other than some sluggishness due to being stored.
So the guy calls, saying that the bike won't start, and I ask him to tell me what he's doing to start it. He says that he's "turning the key and pressing the button". What about the engine cut-off switch? What about the clutch? Now he says that nothing happens when he turns the key -- so he's obviously tried "starting it" for long enough to drain the battery, or he's left the key turned between attempts.
I'm thinking there never was an R6, otherwise he'd know how to start a motorcycle.
I'm afraid (if the new owner can get it started) that my baby will be wrecked before the day is out. Those of you who know me (and the bike) know how neurotic I am about the thing. You'd have had a hard time finding a cleaner, more well-maintained 848 anywhere.

Yeah, I mean unless you really need the money I don't see why a beautiful bike that should go to somebody who can't figure out how to start the bike...plus you could be saving his life (and you baby's)

Just wish I'd known that last night before I let him leave with it for Alabama. If he calls back I may offer to buy it back from him. I know it's petty. I don't own the bike anymore, and it's not my business what the new owner does with it. I guess I'm just being girly and emotional. It just kills me to know that I've spent the last two years pampering that bike and that now it's in the hands of someone who doesn't even know how to start it.

Just think, you may have directly contributed to proving Darwin's survival of the fittest theory.

Well, if you are gonna get all emotional and girly over it after pampering it for two years, why did you sell both your bikes in the first place? LOL
If you guys combine the cars and bikes over the past 4 years, I bet we have gone through almost the same number of vehicles. hehe
It's his bike now. It's just a piece of metal and plastic. If you miss it, go buy another one, something that you will actually use this time. :-)

So why did you sell? I think I read that Dan got rid of the M3 too right?

We bought and sold the M3 as a "venture" several months back. It was a good deal that he scooped up as a toy, played with for a while, then moved at a profit. We're deal-hounds and rarely buy anything at "retail" haha. That allows us to hop around without losing money, and in many cases, make a little money.
I'm selling the 848 for various reasons, primarily that my riding time has decreased significantly due to changes at work, etc., and when I have time to ride it's usually the Monster. I couldn't justify letting it sit in the garage any more. I had some niggles with the Monster as well, (I'm picky) so the plan is to sell both, noodle for a bit, then consolidate into one bike. I love(d) the 848, and I'm sick at the thought of someone trashing it, but it's a jerk move to let a beautiful machine like that sit in a garage being ridden once a month...
I know it's the responsible thing to do but I'm just having seller's remorse. :(

If it was not your bike, it would have been someone else's.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I hear ya. A toy that sits unused is not much of a toy.
Regroup and find a bike that you really like. And get something for Daniel so that you guys can ride together. I would hate not having a bike. Screw work. There is a time for work, and then you go home, and I think that a hectic work schedule is even more of a reason to have something fun to escape on, just my opinion.

Now that you have been paid for it, what does it matter if he keeps it better than you or if he turns it into a track bike and cartwheels it through a gravel trap? If you are concerned about it that much you probably shouldnt have sold it to begin with.

Had you kept the 848 long enough and in as mint condition as you normally keep your stuff you could have probably had a collectors item. Like those 70s and 80s bikes that just sit in people's garages with like 1000 miles on em.

Toys that sit in garages are merely toys to be played with later.

Probably not -- there are plenty of Ducati buyers out there that have 848's that have the same amount of miles on them now as they did when they left the factory.
Besides the fact that there isn't really anything too special about a stock 848. It'd be like holding on to a standard R6.
Only (factory) 848 worth holding onto would be the Hayden one, and even then your not guarenteed a colector.

What's the buyer's #? I'd love to have an 848 and I suspect that one will be available again soon. I prefer the great condition its was in when it left Georgia, but sounds like more likely it will need some parts. And when I go to pick it up I'll be sure to smack him in the back of the head...hard.
