So Georgia saw a 57.6% jump in general sales tax revenue from last year. Wow, so where is all the money going (sarcastic). I guess this is good news somewhat even though our state budget is in the toliet.

How is it possible for sales tax revenue to jump that much? Something must be wrong with the data.

Yep. I'm digging. Something is very wrong with that number.

From Georgia DOR:
October through December 2008 net sales tax: 1,379.1 million dollars
October through December 2009 net sales tax: 1,134.7 million dollars

My old fashioned math says that is an 18% DECLINE in net sales tax income.

I think the reporter has made an error somewhere in his calculations.

Yeap, that's what I was thinking. If there had been that big of an increase in sales tax revenue our budget would look so much like turds leftover from a bad flush. LOL

The article is, according to the DOR's regular published reports, totally wrong. Gross sales tax revenue is DOWN for every month of the last quarter of 2009 compared to 2008. The story doesn't make any sense. Oh wait, his data came from the CENSUS BUREAU. Gives you a lot of confidence in the current census effort, doesn't it?

If Georgia had 57% increase in tax revenues, year over year, from 08 to 09, the state legislature would all be dancing in the streets, probably in Las Vegas.

I was going to say Auburn, but she actually went to The University of Pennsylvania and is about to attend NYU. Which tells me it is Liberal Math.

Apparently its the correct number just not explained properly. From my source :

(10:39:41 AM) XXXXX: so -- that stat
(10:39:48 AM) XXXXX: here's the back story
(10:39:56 AM) XXXXX: that's not aaverage or year end total
(10:40:29 AM) XXXXX: just a direct comparison of Q4 2008 to Q4 2009 and Q4 2008 was the peak of financial dooomage
(10:40:44 AM) XXXXX: (which they really really really should have made clear)

October through December 2008 net sales tax: 1,379.1 million dollars
October through December 2009 net sales tax: 1,134.7 million dollars

That's not average or year end total. Those are month by month totals taken from the published reports at the Georgia Department of Revenue website. Your source needs to explain what two numbers they are comparing? The two numbers above are net sales tax income. That's total sales tax revenue less adjustments and taxes distributed to local governments.
