View Full Version : Had my first blowout
Cruising up 400 heading towards the mountains.
I hear a pop and my handlebars start shaking. I knew what had happened but I didn't want it to be happening.
I release the throttle, didn't apply any brakes and slowly coasted to a stop on the far left side of 400. Luckily Chris and Cameron were with me, Cameron went to get his truck but I had to figure out how to get across 400.
Luckily traffic had built up a bit, so I just basically went horizontal through it and pulled in the emergency lane. Stood there for a while, sweating bullets trying to get my bearings
I'm home safe now, thank god. Was probably the scariest moment I've ever had on my bike.
I guess what saved me is that I didn't panic at all, I was really calm and just cruised to a stop. I should have eaten pavement, pretty ****ing lucky I guess.

sounds like you did it right, had a rear tire go out on me over the summer last year and i had to sit on 985 for about an hour till someone could get their truck to pick me up. Biggest thing is seeing which tire is out so you can determine which brake NOT to use.

I've only had one, and thankfully it was at about 20mph, not interstate speeds. Sounds like you did it exactly right, staying calm can be the key in a lot of situations. Glad it didn't turn out bad.

Glad you made it out unscathed. Is there anything in the tire?

Not that I spotted right away. I'm hoping when I get it changed I can figure out what happened.
Really not a fun thing to have happen on the highway. I'm going to be paranoid about that for a while now. lol

Wait'll you get hit by something big. I took a 1 foot square piece of plywood to the chest/helmet at 70mph.... Had to pick the seat out of my ass, and I was paranoid for a month haha.

I got lucky, it was soaking wet, so when it hit me, it mostly exploded... still felt like a ton of bricks, but it probably would have hurt way worse if it was solid and dry. It did manage to shatter both of the brand new dual headlights I'd just finished installing the day before though, I was PISSED haha.

I hit a pheasant in a truck doing about 65. It hit right where the mirror mounts to the glass. It bent the roof down and shattered the windshield. Ruined the pheasants day, too!

Glad you are ok!
I too would like to know what caused it, money says something punctured the tire and the low air psi caused the blow out. Was the bike riding any different to start with?

Good job. BTW, what are you supposed to do with a blow out? Someone eluded to not grabbing the brakes, so I assume the tire that is flat you do not grab.

You going to brake on the good tire and slow the bitch down is key and never use the brakes on the bad tire.

From the MSF Basic Rider Course Handbook (http://www.msf-usa.org/CurriculumMaterials/BRCHandbook2009.pdf):
Tire Failure:
With modern tubeless tires, actual blowouts are rare, but they can occur.
The most common cause of tire failure is riding with the tire pressure too low.
Check tires frequently and keep them inflated to the manufacturer's specifications.
If a puncture should occur, maintain a firm hold on the handgrips,
but do not fight the steering to correct any wobble or weave that can develop.
Avoid downshifting and braking until speed is low and under control.
If traffic permits, slow gradually and move off to the side of the road.
If braking is necessary, use the brake on the wheel with the good tire.
Using the brake on the wheel with the bad tire can cause a tire to separate from the rim,
and this can cause immediate loss of control.
Be aware that integrated braking systems don't allow "rear brake only" application and
linked braking systems do not allow any single-brake operation.
On motorcycles equipped with either of these systems, braking with the "good tire only"
may not be possible and any braking should be done as lightly as possible.
------
I had a fast leak (no pop - hole size o the diameter of a #2 pencil) on the rear within the first 2000 miles
of my riding career while on I-20, in the #1 lane, at speed, and hadn't thought anything about what to do before hand.
My number one fear of riding came over me: I thought I was going to get run over from behind.
The bike became squirrely and began to slow down.
Too scared to brake, i actually gave a tad bit of throttle and started looking to my
right so that I could get to the right shoulder.
I made it..but bottom ine ...it sucked to lose the rear .... I have pretty much said that if
I lose the front in the same situation, I would probably just kiss my ass goodbye and head
for the median to avoid being ran over after the initial crash.
Glad you made it okay!

Glad you're alright Chris. That sounds pretty scary.
I am going to find out what happened tomorrow, it wasn't really an explosion, but a fast leak...a really fast leak.
I checked my air pressure the day before, so I know it wasn't low. I'm thinking maybe an impact of some sort. Sorry I wasn't responding to the questions. The thread stopped showing up in the "New Posts" section for me. :(
I'll keep you guys posted!
