View Full Version : Freaknik
supposedly theyre trying to get it going again for April here in ATL.
yay or ney?
personally, from what i saw of it, it was a complete cluster Fk. I dont think it pumped in as much money into the ATL economy as it did rob from it.
What ya think?
And do NOT turn this into a damn race debate.

Personally, I didn't mind it. The only time I got caught up in the traffic was the first year I moved here (93) and was going to a show at the Masquerade...I had no idea that the traffic got that bad! Fortunately, the girl that was with me had a bottle of vodka so we just start partying on the way there! (I wasn't driving)
The last year it was here, Doug and I parked the bikes on Peachtree and watched the folks coming through Buckhead. We had quite a few other bikes stop and we all just hung out and had a good time watching the circus.
Now that I'm living out in the 'burbs I can't imagine that it would affect me at all.

Nothing like hood surfin` on the connector south bound for spring break!
Bring it on -- it makes for good TV...
Maybe I lost respect for it when I saw a girl get punched in the face by a guy. She didn't instigate it or anything, just BAM right in the face.

I experienced the first one while Bartending Downtown... Full Blown chaos.. All of the Hotels were shut down.. Its not really the people that come in town for it that are bad... Its all of the young wanna be hood rats that live in Atlanta that start the sh&^T... I say No.. And I have to give the ex Freak Nicker Kasim Reed credit for not wanting it... If he announced that before his election no way he would have been voted in..LOL

Back when I was younger I would have been all for it, BUT I'm older and that isn't my type of thing anymore. If they can keep it more of a springbreak-ie type thing, with actual events and stuff I'm for it. However, if it's just going to be Atlanta overrun with hoodlums and stuff then I say "ship'em to New Orleans". LOL

Probably a bunch of mucky BS like always. I cant believe he inst dead.

I'm with Mongo on this...I don't live down there, so it's not my freaking problem. I don't really care what ATL does with it's money or events schedule. Thats left up to you goons that live in Fulton and pay taxes for all the people in downtown.
i agree with ya, Marc. Like i said, A) there have been too many cutbacks with the ATL police to be able to handle the chaos, and i also think that just based on previous FN years, the crime that follows it, wouldnt be worth the few dollars it may bring.

I rarely venture into Atlanta any more, so it really doesn't matter to shits to me... I had gotten caught in the mess it caused when I was going to school down there and worked in town.
My thoughts on it were that Atlanta ins't really a place to have a spring break type event. We really don't have a draw like a beach or a lake (we have lakes, but not in town where this is) or other activities to really keep the kids coming to town occupied. I don't think Freaknik ever was an official event put on by the city. I understand that tourism and conventions are a big part of the Atlanta economy, but the other events in town don't generally require crowd control of drunk and unruly college students.
+1to TLR67's comments about "Its all of the young wanna be hood rats that live in Atlanta that start the sh&^T"
They were talking about having it at some park but it's too late to get the permit is the story I heard on the news. Take it to Nawlins.

Wasn't it supposed to be a spring break destination for black college kids? If that's who actually showed up it would probably be a positive thing. It would probably be 80% female though. Great if you're a guy...

As far as the city goes its pretty much a lose lose situation. Cops couldnt handle it back in they day, they wont be able to do so now. In the waning years the cops were much more aggressive. We'll lose money and people will go away with a bad taste in their mouth. This isn't a beach town which is where college spring break belongs.

Those things, Mardi Gras and Bike Week, are marketed to and attended by adults with disposable income. If that's what you mean be "done correctly", I guess that's true but Freaknik is a college spring break thing. Most attendees are too young to legally drink and don't have the income to spend a lot of money while they're here. Atlanta just isn't set up for spring break like Panama City or Padre Island etc. ATL is a convention and business meeting spot most of the year so the hotels and other hospitality based businesses are oriented toward that - single occupancy $150 hotel rooms and people spending $200/day on meals and entertainment. Very different and not easily converted to the spring break thing.

Spring break, as a rule, is more of a pain for a destination city than a financial boon. Ft. Lauderdale effectively did away with its "Spring Break Destination" title and converted itself into more of an adult/family vacation destination spot to the betterment of the city and its residents. Mom and pop motels on the beach died out, which I was sad to see, but overall Ft. Lauderdale's economy flourished. Freaknik or any other event involving college students cannot be good for Atlanta in any way, shape, or form.

Most everything I read said it COST the city money, not that it made money off of it.
Among other things, it cost Atlanta one of the largest tech conventions that they had yearly. A huge show. That left specifically because of the problems associated with traffic and everything else brought on by Freaknik.

Just wanted to check. LOL
Seriously, there were very big jumps in crime when Freaknik was here. Many, many instances of looting, hotel rooms destroyed, bills walked out on, a lot of problems. And lots of overtime for the Atlanta police force. I've never heard of these problems associated with Gay Pride Week. If they are, I didn't catch the articles.
And I think the convention that was lost was along the lines of Comdex or something like that. It was one of the biggest in the tech sector and it went to Las Vegas. They actually stated they were moving it because it was coinciding with Freaknik and problems associated with it.
Personally, I don't go into Atlanta unless absolutely necessary, but that was what I remember from the news.

I know all you suburban OTP'ers don't care but I live in Midtown and this would SUCK!
I don't even know why Gay Pride came up, that lasted about 3 hours during a parade which was very well organized. Totally different crowd.

That's exactly what I thought. Completely different crowd, everything. And I'd bet money there was money spend while they were here. I can also guarantee they weren't cruising Peachtree St incessantly, stopping for no reason, radios blaring, fighting, etc.

I was too  . I actually had the opportunity to go one of the events and of course "people" dont know how to act, unfortunately its my people that are always in the wrong. When I brought up the Gay Pride statement, I know that they have issues of all kinds at the mall and there is a pretty big standout (NO HOMO, ONCE AGAIN) and I know that they get attention as well. But I also know that Freaknik is 1) in a bad area 2) probably attacts twice, if not 3 times the crowd to Atlanta. For example, Myrtle Beach isnt the same anymore. Now they have all these restrictions in Myrtle to which you really dont want to go...Reason...."MY PEOPLE DONT KNOW HOW TO ACT"
