ok, someone clue me in. I plug direct line into the cable modem, and im getting 25mbps. Going thru the router, its cut in half, even a little less than half. :wtf: causes this?

Seriously, you shouldn't be getting that kind of slow down. On my desktop, I'm only a click above my speed through the router to my notebooks. Is anyone else in the house on the line with you or are you home alone? Even that shouldn't SIGNIFICANTLY affect it.

do some ping tracerts and see where the bottleneck is. if you get timeouts, then you have a bad connection somewhere.

comcast dude was just here today, swapped out the modem, no bottleneck on the cable line, they were here because my speed had dropped bigtime. Like i said, 23 megs direct line connected to the modem, then it cuts it in half when i plug the modem to the wireless .

That's definitely not making sense. I just ran the test at speedtest.comcast.net and these are my results. This is on my Windows side of my Mac, so the G side of my wireless router. How long has this been going on? I'm running the G/N router we talked about a couple of months ago and looks like I'm not losing much if any speed right now.

wireless is much much slower because of the error correction (even though the speed is rated high, it will keep rebroadcasting the same packet till it gets it right (interference). even wireless N has the same issues.

it's normal to see reduced speed (even 50%) using wireless as compared to wired.

look for other wireless devices around the house in the same frequency range (cordless phones).

Theres no interference, the cable guy had a meter here and was looking for that too. I have no idea how long its been going on as i never noticed it before. Ive had this router for a few years now, so it may just be time for a new one.

this is what i get on the wireless :mad: Im sitting here drinking my coffee in my living room right now and just too damn lazy (its too friggin early) to walk upstairs to the modem to plug in. Lets just say its over 20Mbsp when hardwired in.

I'll admit tho, even at this speed, downloading racing torrents ROCK! I just downloaded both FP1's from Quatar (the GP bikes and the new 600's which is the bikes that took the 250's place). Downloaded both at the same time in less than 15 mins. Each was 830 meg files. :up: :up:

haha! naaaa, in just the last 2 hours, ive uploaded half of that, and still uploading. I like to keep my ratio at .30 or higher, altho right now, there are hardly any requests/leechers, so its uploading very slow.

WPA is harder to crack. WPA2 is much harder. (this from a little googling).
In reality though, unless you see a geek hanging out on your street hunched over his laptop, who are you protecting yourself from? If you lived in a condo on Peachtree St., it might be an issue, but you don't. The best security for a wireless signal is distance.

thats what im thinking Wally. This is a netgear router, about 3 years old now. Im up here on it, and again, wireless speed is less than 10mbps, hard wired to the router is 15mbps, hard wired to the modem is 23mbps.

Todd, the Netgear I got from Fry's is awesome. G and N dual band. Runs fast as hell. Hasn't slowed down my internet at all, as you can see from the speeds I pulled last night. It's also the commercial line from Netgear, not the residential line.

Wally, I was wrong. I went with DLink. Its the DIR-825. Looks like its running $129 at Fry's. I've been very impressed with it. Very flexible and incredible speed. You can't go wrong with it.

Its actually $10 less at Fry's than TigerDirect. Kinda surprising. Like I said, great setup and been running like a champ. I'm routinely running two notebooks and downloading to my AppleTV all at once and it still flies.

oh netgear that explains it LOL. I had a problem with there router and the customer service sucked from India so I ditched the Netgear and haven't looked back .It's cisco systems from now on.

Give DLink a shot, too. I've heard more than a couple people having issues with Linksys since Cisco bought them. Not sure, but just something I've heard mentioned.

This is about it. I actually tend to spend a little more to buy for future expansion. Rather spend once than twice. You can probably get by on single band. I just figured it was worth the extra $30 with all I might be putting on it and the amount of people around me.

the advantage of dual or multi band is so you can have different wireless speeds running at the same time without upgrading existing equipment. most higher speed routers will also broadcast for lower speed devices. if you have wireless N, you can also use your G or B laptop. unfortunately, supporting slower speeds will also slow down the router. when doing speed test, shutting off other bands and going native on either just G or N will show significant speed increase.

wireless N is a new breed, it uses multiple broadcast (multiplexing) to gain better packet reception (less error checks or repeated packets). but wired networking will always be faster. there are a few tricks to speeding up wireless for multi users. the key is reducing unnecessary broadcasts, also, removing security encoding and using mac filtering (monitoring is useful to catch hackers).
