I wish someone would actually come up with a little more effort on the part about starting this, especially not using the words splitting but instead lane sharing and filtering. That's pretty weak sauce there for a petition.

It needs to include a blurb about the recent accident in AZ where the bikers got ran over by the dump truck at the light and how that probably would have been way less severe had the bikes been allowed to filter to the front. How about easing congestion, encouraging people to use more fuel efficient vehicles like MC's are and the fact 4 motorcycles can share 1 parking spot.

It's a start, but not very well written to get any serious attention.

Sounds like you have a start, why not do a formal writeup?

I'll sign but I dont think filtering would have helped those guys in AZ. You aren't going to have 9 bikes filtering to the front.

On a side note, Dan why does one of your post take up half a page?

I agree Dan.... I think you should do this right.. If anyone can from a 2 Wheeling perspective you can..

Yeah not sure if you'd get 9 bikes up to the front, but definitely not being sandwiched between cars and trucks is a huge plus.

I wondered that too. It might be because my sig? Its like my sig doesn't start till way down the page? I might try re-doing it?

[edit] Changed my sig a bit to remove the quote and shrunk it down some.

I don't like the idea of repealing that law, allows for too much stupid at speed. I'd rather see real wording to allow for filtering when traffic is below a certain speed or stopped at lights in addition to the law already on the books.

Good point, although there are several states that don't specifically out law splitting like GA does, so not sure it would turn into a free for all. Although I think the only way we'd ever get something like this to pass is if it has teeth on both ends for ultimately stupid over the top bikers that don't get the whole concept of sharing when traffic is barely moving and also for cars that think they own the road and don't want to let MC's pass in stop and go traffic.

Isn't the Georgia Carry law for this situation?

Trouble is, if Dan produced it, the petition would have more pages than Obama's healthcare bill. I would be too old to ride or lane Share before the legislators finished reading through the first draft.

I like Texas' approach to lane sharing.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT
relating to the operation and movement of motorcycles during
periods of traffic congestion.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

SECTION 1. Section 545.060, Transportation Code, is amended
by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (e) to read as
follows:
(a) An operator on a roadway divided into two or more
clearly marked lanes for traffic:
(1) shall drive as nearly as practical entirely within
a single lane, except as provided by Subsection (e); and
(2) may not move from the lane unless that movement can
be made safely.
(e) The operator of a motorcycle may operate the motorcycle
for a safe distance between lanes of traffic moving in the same
direction during periods of traffic congestion if the operator:
(1) is at least 21 years old;
(2) has successfully completed a motorcycle operator
training and safety course under Chapter 662;
(3) is covered by a health insurance plan providing
the operator with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries
incurred as a result of an accident while operating a motorcycle;
and
(4) operates the motorcycle:
(A) at a speed not more than five miles per hour
over the speed of the other traffic;
(B) in traffic that is moving at a speed of 20
miles per hour or less; and
(C) in a location other than a school crossing
zone or other than a location where the posted speed limit is 20
miles per hour or less.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005

Trouble is, if Dan produced it, the petition would have more pages than Obama's healthcare bill. I would be too old to ride or lane Share before the legislators finished reading through the first draft.

Agreed.

To be honest, I think the easiest way to get it passed is through baby steps. First, only allow filtering when traffic is stopped at a traffic light in a road that has more than one lane each way. Motorcyclist cannot exceed 5 mph and maintain safe distance between lanes. Not permitted when wide vehicles are present. Etc. Make it so that it is worthwhile for the people who can use it the most, but strict enough to keep the tickets flowing in from the dumbasses.

Then progress to lane sharing in slow moving traffic.

I think the only way to make it serious is to be patient and get "filtering" pushed through first, then work on "lane sharing" :up:

Otherwise it will be too easy to be torn apart, since most of the negatives come from the act of splitting.

EDIT: agreed, Texas law looks good. That's plenty of allowable circumstances to make me happy.

You know another part I would okay with adding to make it appear "safer" would be requiring the rider to wear say a hi-viz vest to be able to lane share. That would right there make it very easy for the police to see the legitimate guys who are safely sharing vs the idiots acting like fools. And the side benefit of that is it gets more riders wearing hi viz stuff and being seen better.

Regardless, the Georgia General Assembly can only meet for a maximum of 40 days each year, beginning on the second Monday in January. If there isn't a bill by now, it isn't going to happen this year.

I agree, though. The Texas bill looks pretty good.
