Can anyone tell me the difference between an FMF muffler for an XR650L & an XR650R? I purchased a FMF muffler for my XR650L, removed the stock muffler, & could not get the FMF to fit. I even removed the header & the FMF will not line up with the mounting brackets. I contacted the place where I bought it from, but they needed to talk to a tech & get back to me. I did a search online & the only person that had problems getting the FMF to fit his XR650L had received a muffler for an XR650R. I tried to IM that person but it looks like his account was closed.

The XR650L has a steel frame based on the old XR600R dirtbike and is air cooled. The XR650R has a water cooled engine in an aluminum frame. I am not surprised they wont interchange.

Yes, I know the differences in the bikes. Just not the differences in the dimensions of the FMF muffler for each.

Well if you want blueprints for the dimensions of the muffler perhaps you should contact FMF's engineers. Since they are completely different bikes I wouldnt think they would interchange. From your post above it seems like you were curious to see if they fit. The answer is NO they wont interchange by just bolting them up. A enthusiastic person with a torch, welder and saw can make anything fit.
Why not just buy a muffler for the bike you have?

Oh sure, FMF will send the blue prints right over...not. I know the mufflers are not interchangable (without relocating brackets.) I purchased the muffler for an XR650L. What I need to know is how to tell the difference between the two, so that I can prove to the company that I bought it from that they shipped me the wrong part.

So you bought one to be used on a XR650L and suspect you receive one for a XR650R?
Why didnt you say so?
Is there a p/n stamped on it?
Absent that, I would just call FMF and talk to their customer service. They make everything in CA, not in China, and are very helpful.

After a brief search on their site, even the XR600R shows a different p/n from the XR650L even though the bikes are almost exactly the same. Perhaps they shipped on for the XR600R thinking it would interchange?

I mean... his original post clearly conveyed to me that he thought he had the wrong muffler, and was looking for a way to confirm. But yes, call FMF would have been my first thought too.

There is no part # on the muffler. That is the first thing that I looked for. I will contact FMF via the link that you provided. Thanks.

You're right:up:
My response should have been:
The difference is the XR650R muffler fits an XR650R and the XR650L muffler fits a XR650L:up:
Cheers
P.S. Why is that when I have problems with my crap....I dont need the help of "the internet" to solve 'em? Must be because I cant read

Dude, nobody reads anymore. I wasn't being a dick, just letting the OP know I thought he got his point across.

Fair enough. I just think had he put this in his first post instead of his 3rd I think it would have been a little clearer. With an internet connection though and given the nature of his problem and the scope of *this* forum, my 1st resource would have been calling FMF:up:

True, it would have been a better question on a honda/dirtbike specific forum; In the end, he got what he needed. Weird that there's no part number on the muffler itself, that seems counterintuitive to me.

Me also. Hope he figures it out.

Depends on the muffler. FMF sometimes uses one can for a multitude of applications with a different mid-pipe being used for individual models. That way, they don't have to stock 40 different mufflers, just one muffler with 40 different mid-pipes. Makes very good business sense. FMF isn't the only one that does this.

Same reason aftermarket street exhausts have essentially a fancy hose clamp as a mount for the cans.

I called FMF & I was correct. I was sent a muffler for an XR650R. I am told that it will fit XR650L thru 2007. However, I have a 2008. They are sending me the correct muffler & a label to return the muffler that I have currently.

I wish. It is all 1 peice with a spacer & nut welded on the mid-pipe (the 2008 XR650L has the spacer welded on the frame instead of the muffler.)

It sucks that you have to wait more before bolting up the new pipe but glad it worked out for you.
