My bike is a Yamaha FJ1200 with roughly 39,000 miles on it. I changed the oil 1,500 miles ago and today I had to add 1/4 quart to top it off. I am not worried about it since it isn't a lot of oil and there is no leaks or smoking.

My question is this, what do you consider normal for oil consumtion on a bike? I know it varies by age and manufacturer, but is there any guidelines or rules of thumb?

I had to google.. but that's an air/oil cooled bike, no? older bike + 40K miles + air cooled + warmer temperatures, I'd say that's acceptable oil usage, but that's just, like, my opinion, dude.

Yes, it is an air cooled bike. I did the Google thing but never came up with anything specific. I must not have worded it properly:)

That's nothing on most bikes and 1/4 quart in 1500 miles. So at 3k miles you might be 1/2 quart low. Pretty good for an aircooled bike with 40k on it.

Some of the new 08 KLR's were drinking a quart every 1k miles and Kawi said that was acceptable!

nono... I had to google to find out that it's an aircooled bike. The rest is just my observations based on my knowledge of aircooled bikes in general.

I feel better then. My air cooled Katana needed about a quart added some weeks back, coming up on 3k miles.
