ATLANTA — Drivers caught texting, checking email or using the Internet behind the wheel will get a point on their driver's license under a bill headed to the governor for his signature.

Offenders would also face a $150 fine for the misdemeanor. The bill passed the Senate on Wednesday in a 47-0 vote and the House approved the measure on Thursday in a 133-24 vote.

A separate bill would apply to teens and would include talking and texting while driving. The same penalties would apply to people found guilty. That bill passed the Senate on Thursday in a 47-2 vote, and the House also voted Thursday 137-23 to approve the bill. Navigation devices are not included in the bills.
Both measures would go into effect on July 1.

finally, I'm not going to say I've never done it but not all the time like some people. I hope they enforce it.

I am glad to see they are passing this, let's just see how well they enforce it. Since I am in my work truck driving 90% of the day (loging at least 300 miles) I see a lot of people texting, eating, reading the paper or just so distracted by who knows what, that they have no worries about how they are driving and how they affect other people on the road.

Sure, but most of us prefer not to leave a chaotic trail of swerving cars and and screeching brakes in our wake as we drive along.

My roommate puts his phone up at the top of the steering wheel and texts while he drives. I constantly yell at him for it, because it makes him a worse driver. He may not notice the stupid shit he does, but as a passenger, I do. Hate to say it, but I hope he ends up with a ticket for this, better than killing someone, and he won't listen to me about it, but he'll listen to his wallet.

Yes, they do, even at 4:45 am when I am coming through from Griffin. If I got caught by one on 314, I have to sit and sit and sit with nobody coming through from the sides.

Back on topic, this law is a good thing. I am guilty, on occasion, but I really try to limit it.

Coming back from Savannah last weekend I passed a girl "driving" down the road, both hands texting, not even looking at the road. I was driving beside her with my horn blaring and she never even looked up once. Then when she finally did look up at me, she put one hand on the wheel and looked right back down and kept texting. Yeah....THAT needs to be illegal. Suprisingly it's not the first time I've seen someone doing this.

That may be a little harsh but I do agree there needs to be some new laws in place.

how will this be proven also how do you tell the difference between texting and dialing also it says it excludes navigation devices but my droid is a navigation device and a phone so what does that count as. I'm all for limiting distractions while driving and texting is unfortunately a big one for some cagers and since I ride my bike 99% of the time it won't really affect me at all but I see this another money making endeavor that will ultimately not increase safety at all

It's been illegal for years for slower traffic to drive in the left lane. Ever seen that enforced? Hope they do better with this law.

LOL they don't say people can't do it, they just said they couldn't do it well.

I am for this. As a new rider, I am even more aware at some people's inabilities to drive. When those same people can't drive w/o texting, start texting, I can imagine myself getting scared. People are already careless enough, they have no respect for their cars or other drivers/riders space or rights on the road. Not sure how they will enforce this, but I am sure that it is the right step.

I can agree with this. I was on Pleasant Hill(how ironic is that name for that road lol) this morning riding into work, 5 car crash at Pleasant Hill and Club drive had traffic backed up almost back to Ronald Regan around 7:15. Girl in a VW bug turns in to the road by the old mellow Mushroom U turns and tries to come back onto PH going the other way, why I don't know but with traffic barely moving she decides to come back out to PH as the light turns green on it running the light and came within an inch or two of taking me out as I was first in line at the light. I gave her an ear full and the bitch flicked me off, well if you didn't guess cell phone at the ear. DUI fines work for me.

Ya'll are all dreaming if you think this law will do anything. This is just another revenue raising function for your local government. One point and 150 bucks. Speeding is three points and $250, and everyone still drives like a bat out of hell.

Hope you all feel safe about this little pandering bill passed by the dear leaders down at the capital, it will change nothing.

I agree with petrel800. I'd love to see it strictly enforced, but it will end up being one of those infractions that are added to your speeding or reckless driving citation (i.e. no seatbelt, windows to tinted too dark, radio too loud, etc.). Good way for them to rack up $$.

It may be a small charge but when you start seeing people lose their license over too many texting and driving charges people will think twice. If you are constantly doing it it will add up quick. Not to mention now that its becoming a law courts will be pushing for higher charges if accused of texting while driving caused a wreck and such. Its at the least a step in the correct direction

That's really the only practical thing. How is cop ever going to write a ticket for this? People will just hold their phone out of sight to do it. It's a great concept but only enforceable against the truly stupid.

That may be a little harsh but I do agree there needs to be some new laws in place. How "harsh" is it when a father, mother, daughter, son etc has to be buried because somebody was texting, reading, putting on makeup etc? Does the fact that the other driver was "only" multitasking rather than drinking make the victim any less dead?

I agree with the law though, so long as it contributes to fixing the situation and isn't just a dollar chaser!
