Okay, I'm getting frustrated with my ISP and I need some guidance. I'm pretty technical for most things computer related, but I've never been too involved with the network side of things.
I've been having an on going issue of spotty internet service for at least the past month. Well probably long before that, but I've been seriously watching it lately. My service is through NuLink which is cable service through Newnan Utilities. I have both TV & internet through them.
I'm not sure how much this is telling me, but I've been keeping a constant ping open to google.com. On avg (over a couple hour period), I'm dropping (timing out) about 5% of packets. Sometimes it will even be a couple in a row. Usually when that happens, I can most definitely see a glitch in what I'm currently doing. We definitely experience some periods during the day when we drop enough packets where things start disconnecting like my VPN, messengers, etc. That's when it really becomes frustrating. Uploading pics to my smugmug is a joke and takes me all day because so many of the pics fail when they try to upload.
I requested 2 weeks ago that my modem be put on a watch list and I'm starting to become on a first name basis with some of these tech's when I call in.
The last 3 days have been really crappy days. Sunday, our service got so bad, Sarah and I just went over to my parent's house to finish up our ride report we were writing. This morning had no internet till about 11:30am, then it dropped again at 12:30pm and they got me back up at about 1:30pm. It was actually a combination of things going on today, but the tech said they found "ingress" from another node down the street and moved us to a different node? (That's all foreign to me, but they thought that should fix my issues, but it hasn't).
So help me out here. It shouldn't be normal to drop packets? Today the tech on the phone actually suggested I ping my modem instead of google to see if I dropped any packets there? What good does that do? That just seems like it will tell me if I drop anything between my PC & Router on the way to the modem?
Are there any programs I can run on my PC to monitor my service and tell me when it goes down and for how long so I can go back at them with this stuff. (It would be nice if it had a nice easy report it generated or something, but I'll take what I can get). I'm getting tired of paying for a service they aren't providing me.
