My son is 15 and very mature for his age. He is looking for his first job. He will do really anything. He is in school for another 10 days i think but then he can work whenever. If anyone has anything or knows of anything please let me know. We are in the Duluth area near the mall.
Thanks a bunch!

Good luck to him 15 yo is a tough age to find a job in many places because of OSHA reg's and such. Almost better to hit up the neighbors for lawn cutting jobs, etc.

Not to be mean, but working in the fast food world will do him a lot of good. Can very easily humble the youngsters but also teach them how to learn on their feet and quickly. I personally think everyone should start at McDonalds or something like it. Teaches them some things and hopefully keeps them on a path so they don't have to go back to where they started.

I pretty much completely agree with this. Nothing wrong with starting to work this way. Teaches responsibility straight off the bat. Also teaches how to deal with people. Other than those they work with. Smart move.

Exactly. I started as a dishwasher in a small short order resturant when I was 15. Within a few months, I was helping the Chef prep and cook. Then did my time and McDonalds and a TacoBell. From there, it's been a steady climb thankfully. However, I will be the first to say I learned volumes from resturant industry. I'm still a crappy cook, but learned a lot of people skills and learned that nothing will just be handed to me. Something many (not all) of todays youth certainly lacks.

Some of the most undesirable losers work in the fast food industry. Do you really want to put a 15yo in that situation? Just pointing out a different view. Bagging grocery's and cutting lawns will build lots of character at that age.

My High School job history goes likes this. Started stocking shelves and cleaning at a local pharmacy then worked as an usher at a movie theater, then onto McDonald's for 3 years. The pharmacy taught me about working around customers, organization and attention to detail. The ushering job reinforced the dealing with customers but also taught me a little bit more about respect and courtesy. While both of these jobs were good for a starting teen they were no where close to what was expected at McDonald's. McDonald's expected you to perform your job tasks in a fast paced environment with no errors and to be able to adapt and think quickly to the customers demands. The McDonald's I worked at was the busiest one in Cincy and wasn't uncommon to do $900 to $1000 sales hours on Friday nights and weekend afternoons. This was back in the 70s when a hamburger was 50 cents and a Big Mac was $1.00.
I would have him look at McDonald's, Wendy's or Chic-Fil-A on the fast food side to begin his search. All three offer pretty decent work environments and they also have scholarship programs for their employees if he decides to stay on until he graduates. Another thing with those is they also promote from within so if he is motivated he can advance into more than a cook or counter person. If he just wants to get his feet wet look at the theaters in the area. They need concession people, ushers and ticket takers all the time.

I'll agree with you on the quality of folks in many of those establishments. However, the flip side to your view is that it would provide a younger person with a great experience on why they should aim higher. Then again, some fall into the trap. It's a catch 22 for sure.
I also have nothing against bagging or lawn mowing. Mowing ppl's lawns helped pay for my very first computer that I built and got me started on my path to where I am today. Hard work is hard work and builds character.

I'm sure some pretty undesirable losers do what you do also. I'm just saying
Chick-fil-a is pretty good. They have a good program to help pay for college and are pretty flexible about scheduling. I have a niece & nephew working at one and they enjoy it. They are treated very well

John's right, Chik Fil A is a top notch place to get your kid into. They really treat their employees right and have some amazing scholarship programs IIRC. Really couldn't go wrong with that one.

Nothing mean about it. I 100% agree. The problem is there are a LOT of kids right now looking for jobs. He has applied at Chik-fil-a and McDonalds and heard nothing. Six flags is about 40 minutes from us so im not sure thats a viable job for him but its a thought.
thanks everyone

On at least the Chik Fil A job, if he hasn't done it, have him call them back and ask if they have had a chance to look at his application. There are ways to put it and not sound overly aggressive, but these days, you have to do things a little different. I would recommend calling one or both to show additional interest in the positions. Might help put him ahead of some others.

Hey John, glad to see you so bitter!
Sorry, got to meet DOT regulations to do my job. That pretty much eliminates all the convicts, felons and other low lifers...

Also gets them free (or atleast discounted) free which will lessen the food bill. I know when my brother worked at KFC he was always bringing chicken and crap home.

Also make sure he dresses well. I've seen what some kids wear when job searching. A teenager dressed to impress may open doors
