I know a few of you on the board have had dealings with Salvage title bikes. I found what appears to be a good deal on a Salvage titled bike. Are there any issues in Ga with getting it registered for the street? Any hoops to jump through?

Will have to pass a simple inspection. After that you get issued a rebuilt title. Hopefully somebody will put up the link to the inspection requirements, I cant find them right now.

Sarah and I bought a salvaged '08 Ninja 650R and she went through the process. It was quite easy. I don't think anything has changed, but there are a lot less inspection stations due to the budget cuts.
Here's the threads on BSB since they are no longer on here:

FWIW, there was an inspection station in Douglasville, I don't know if it is still there though.

As far as I know, if you buy a bike that's already been through the inspection process in GA (thus receiving a "rebuilt"-branded title, I believe) you don't need to get it reinspected upon purchase, it works just like a normal title. However, a bike from another state, even if it's been inspected there (i.e. rebuilt title) will need to be inspected in GA before you can register it ... ditto for any salvage-branded title bikes, regardless of state.
I haven't done it personally but that's the info I've found when considering such an undertaking in the past.

I think that was one that got the axe. :( It was the closest station to us.

That's the way I understand it too. Why GA wants a re-inspection from a "rebuilt" title out of state is crazy. I think most states accept out of state re-built titles no problem. At least if its already titled in GA though, you don't have any issues.

From the old board...
Okay, today was a busy day in the life of my Kawi. First we discovered that older EX250 turn signals should fit my bike. And of course Dan had a spare set around. The only difference was the plugs. Fortunately my bike came with the bit of wire still plugged in from the missing turn signal as well as the complete right turn signal. So with a bit of splicing of wires and some fineggling of the rubber bases, they were on. And whala...and nice shiney new tail complete with turn signals.
http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396899380_Wh6bw-L.jpg Also put back on ALL the reflectors. These have to be there for the inspection as they feel they're important to the safe operation of the motorcycle. Either way, being more visible is never a bad thing. http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396898831_e8h68-L.jpg From there I installed the new clutch lever. And let me pause for a minute to impart a bit of wisdom. There is a little itty bitty spring inside the clutch lever housing. Be very careful when removing housing (I wasn't) so that spring does not jump out onto the garage floor(it did). Also so you can pay attention to where said spring goes (I didn't) because (as I found out) the schematics in the service manual don't even mention the spring and the parts Fiche isn't specific about where it goes. Fortunately (after trying it in variouse places and positions) I was able to figure out where it went. http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396899143_iGFpz-L.jpg So after that she was finally street worthy. YAY!! Of course I had to run her up and down the nieghborhood, but a cop parked at the other end made me scamper back home before my hooliganess was discovered. After a bit of deliberation (not much really) I decided to run it down the road to an empty school parking lot where I could do a bit more test riding. As a note here, I had never previously ridden a 650r and had chosen it merely from sitting on it in the showroom floor and reading variouse reports on them. I have also never owned a motorcycle with a ""twin"" engine. All my bikes have been inline-fours. So it ""sounded"" different and felt different. Twins have a deeper, meaner grunt to their engine (do they make termignoni pipes for Kawis ? ) , but boy is it sweet. And the power was very smooth, no whiplash take-off only to smooth out once you get going. It was smooth all the way through and very predictable in the corners. I can't wait to really get this bike out and see what it can do. But alas it's not ""legal"" yet so I scooted back home to the safety of the garage before I could be discovered. Sorry no pics of ride, was too excited to remember camera. One thing I didn't like on my maiden voyage was the handlebars. They suck big time and had my shoulder and wrist achin in no time. They're too tall and just at an odd angle for me. So once home , we ripped them off and replaced em with a set of FZ1 handlebars I had left over that never got put on my previouse bike. Now they where too short, but much closer to feeling ""right"". Dan to the rescue again, with a set of bar risers in place , now they where perfect. He doesn't care for em, but agrees they're better than the other ones. http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396899895_5wqvB-L.jpg Oh and as you may have noticed in a previouse pic, the Jesus is off my front fender. It only took an hour of scrubbing trying variouse chemicals. Here was my original arsenal. http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396899266_V8iCm-L.jpg none of that stuff even touched it. Here's what finally worked. http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396899455_cZZpt-L.jpg This stuff says that it may damage plastics, but I figured I'd take my chances. At most, I may have removed a bit of the clear coating and if you look really close, you can still make out the words in the paint. http://bluelghtning.smugmug.com/photos/396898956_KHU9C-L.jpg Guess you can't un-baptise a bike. Oh well, it still looks better. So now the only things on my shopping list are a set of bar risers as Dan will eventually want these back.Plus they don't really match the handlebars. And a set of Bar ends as the Kawi ones won't fit the FZ bars. Not too shabby for a days work. Oh and I looked up the inspection dates ( http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/salvage/InspectionStations.asp )and the next one I'll be able to get to won't be till Nov. 4th. But I still have to call and confirm that they'll be open that day and what form of currency I'll have to bring. So that's all for now..more later.

"BTW just an insurance note. Even though it has a Salvage title, the rep. said I could put full coverage on it, however should it be totalled (again) or stolen, they wouldn't give me the full value for the bike. They will also not tell you how much they would give you. Just incase anyone was wondering."

"Here's another salvage note (I'm learning as I go along,so bare with me) it's important to check with your state about the salvage rules BEFORE buying a salvage bike. Some states require it to be rebuilt by a liscenced rebuilder. Georgia fortunately does not. Here's a list of what is required by the state of Georgia Salvage Vehicles built in the State of Georgia (1986 and newer) (Vehicles in Ga older than 1986 do not require a title) One or more pictures of the vehicle in its salvaged condition MUST be submitted. A completed MV-1 title application form. (Provided by the station during check in). The ""SALVAGE"" certificate of title in the rebuilder's or individual 's name. (note: This part is false as the state will NOT reissue the salvage title in your name. It must be inspected and pass as rebuilt before title can be transferred per Ga. DMV) A T-129 (Labor and Parts Certification) form completed, signed, and notarized (new forms do not have to be notarized). Submit bill(s) of sale made out to the rebuilder or individual, listing each part used in repairing the vehicle. These bill(s) of sale must indicate whether the part was ""new"" or ""used"". The stock number or part number must be shown along with the part name, if the part is ""new"". If the part is ""used"", the serial number of the vehicle it was taken from must be shown. Each part's bill of sale must be signed with the full signature of the seller. A certified check or money order for $118.00 made payable to Georgia Department of Revenue. A certified check or money order for $75.00 made payable to Austin’s Used Trucks. A combined total of $193.00 can be paid in cash. Waiver Form completed. (provided by the station) Copy of a valid rebuilder number (UP00****) or GA driver's license if individual. Bill of Sales or T-5 tax exempt form per vehicle. Also here is the link to the Douglas County inspection station's website to down load all neccessarry forms for inspection in Georgia. http://www.austinstrucks.com/ Each state should have a similar site for their inspection stations or you could actually apply to have the vehicle inspected at your house. We opted not to do this as we figure the inspector may be more nit-picky than if we went to the station where they have to inspect 150+ vehicles by noon. Also do not be afraid to call the station and ask questions. They seemed to be very helpful. But always double check that the station IS going to be open on the particular date you chose. What form of currency is accepted and how much to bring. Also what time you need to be there as most stations have a cut off time."

"Unless you're liscenced, you are only alowed to have 2 salvaged bikes inspected per year. *** Rules of Inspections *** 1. Vehicles inspected after July 1, 2007 will be branded ""rebuilt "". 2. Only a T-172 state form will be issued at the station which states if the vehicle passes or fails. If the vehicle passes, a Georgia Title will be mailed to the address you provide. If the vehicle fails, you must make the repairs and have the vehicle re-inspected. Note: re-inspects are $175.00. 7. Tags are handled by your local tag office. Please consult them for their rules after inspection. 8. Titles can take up to 6 weeks to be mailed to your address. Salvage titles cannot be walked through Trade port's office. 9. The vehicle cannot be driven until it passes the inspection (except for out of state rebuilds with current tags and insurance). 10. BTW, we just sold our 2008 Ninja 650R yesterday. I kind of thought we would struggle with the rebuilt title, but we had it priced right and people were really interested in it and it sold with in 1 day of posting on CL. It sold a lot easier then I expected between having both high mileage and rebuilt title. Lots of questions on the title, but I pointed out everything and soothed a lot of people's fears about it.
Most people are clueless when it comes to salvaged/rebuilt titles.
