Just to inform everyone, the Govenor signed SB308 into law. This changes the places which Georgia Weapons licenses (formally Georgia Firearms License) holders can carry. It also makes carrying a knife legal.

http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2009_10/sum/sb308.htm

Please read up on the laws to make sure you know what is legal and what isnt.

Stay safe.

I hate reading all this legal stuff. Whats the gist of the bill?

On June 8, Governor Sonny Perdue (R) signed Senate Bill 308 into law.
SB308 will reform Georgia’s handgun carry laws so that a Georgia firearms license would enable a person to carry any handgun or knife, openly or concealed. SB 308 would also allow Georgia Firearm License holders to carry in more places by repealing the broad and vague “public gathering ban.”
Unfortunately, Governor Perdue vetoed Senate Bill 291, which would have allowed a person lawfully licensed to carry a firearm the right to carry in all non-secure areas of airports, as well as while dropping off or picking up passengers at an airport. Also included in the bill was a provision that would make the license renewal process much easier. Instead of the licensee having to remember to renew, the probate court would have been required to send out renewal notices 90 days before expiration.

Not surprised on the airport thing. Granted, mine will still be in the truck when I go pick someone up...

Knife carry was not illegal in all areas, but there were county and city ordinances against it. Now State law overrides those.
Airport for pickup and dropoff and in the parking lots seems to be legal, just not in the terminals.

Knife laws have always been vague as shit, even moreso than most gun laws.

Stolen of GPDO:

# Creates “weapons” license that would allow knives and other concealable weapons to be carried legally
# Addresses carrying long guns
# Removes parking lots from places off limits
# Allows carry in bars if owner permits
# Removes the 1000′ buffer from “School Safety Zones”
# Makes carrying on school property a misdemeanor with license and felony without license.
# Puts picture on counterfeit proof license
# Allow you to have weapons on airport property, but not in the terminal.
# Removes the lifetime prohibitor for misdemeanor marijuana convictions
# Clarifies all codes related to weapons.
# Eliminates Georgia’s Jim Crow public gathering law and replaces it with a shorter and clearer list of places off limits
# Expands the categories of people ineligible for a license
# Modifies the current presumption that a person with a concealed firearm is a criminal to a presumption of innocence.

So still can't carry on school property.

"(7) A person who is licensed in accordance with Code Section 16-11-129 or issued a permit pursuant to Code Section 43-38-10, when such person carries or picks up a student at a school building, school function, or school property or on a bus or other transportation furnished by the school or a person who is licensed in accordance with Code Section 16-11-129 or issued a permit pursuant to Code Section 43-38-10 when he or she has any weapon legally kept within a vehicle when such vehicle is parked at such school property or is in transit through a designated school zone by any person other than a student;
(8) A weapon possessed by a license holder which is under the possessor's control in a motor vehicle or which is in a locked compartment of a motor vehicle or one which is in a locked container in or a locked firearms rack which is on a motor vehicle which is being used by an adult over 21 years of age to bring to or pick up a student at a school building, school function, or school property or on a bus or other transportation furnished by the school, or when such vehicle is used to transport someone to an activity being conducted on school property which has been authorized by a duly authorized official of the school; provided, however, that this exception shall not apply to a student attending such school;"

looks like you can leave it locked up in your glove box while picking up the kids or attending school functions.

correction: state law does NOT preempt ordinances involving weapons other than firearms. Local ordinances still hold weight.

Pretty sure these were provisions of the veto'd 291. I could be wrong. Technically the airport isn't off limits because it was originally determined by judge shoob to be a public gathering. As there is no longer a public gathering...

You could have a gun in your car on school property for a LONG time.......it was on your person outside the car where it was an issue.

291 said in the terminal, 308 allowed for parking lots and curbside. No inside due to it being defined as a government building since it houses an authority or something like that.

The second part I am not 100% on.
