Ok, I'm about to upgrade the memory in my laptop. It currently has 512MB. It's PC4200S. My question is can I use a different memory or can I only use PC4200? I found a good deal on a 2GB chip of PC5300 memory and I just wanted to know if it will work before I ordered it. Thanks

That depends on your laptop and motherboard. Go to the manufacturer's website and look up your specs, it will tell you what RAM your computer comes with, as well as your options for upgrade. Or, go to kingston (or is it crucial? I can never remember, google it) or maybe corsair's website, they can check your mobo for you and tell you what RAM will work with your setup.

Its Crucial. Basically spot in NiceGuys. Dont want to go too much faster than your MoBoard can handle, it wont recognize any of them.

if you put faster ram in it will simply down clock it anyway. no big deal if the prices are close to the same

I found RAM/motherboard combos to be particularly finicky during my last build. I would check a compatibility guide to avoid problems.

sometimes the compatible faster memory is cheaper than the old discontinued but still available OEM memory.
pc 6400 used to be cheaper than the slower pc 4200. i don't know what the current prices are at the moment. both are compatible.

I just checked and I can only go up to 2GB but I have to use two 1GB units. The memory I found is a 2GB unit so it won't work. Thanks for the info.
