I was wondering if there was anyone where on the forums that has or knows someone who has did the DIY gutted cat mod on the stock y-pipe. I picked up my 2007 R1 about a month ago and the heat from the exhaust is killing me! I read on r1-forum that gutting the cat will greatly reduce the heat coming from the exhaust. If that is true, I sure as hell want to do just that. Can someone please help guide me into gutting my cat or help me find a shop that will do it for me for cheap.

I've never gutted my cat, but its a mistake to think that it will help with the heat.

Getting rid of the cat helps a ton with the heat. Here's a post on the R1 forum showing how to gut the cat on the 07/08, link (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3740727&postcount=260)

I did my 2006 R6. It's real easy.

1. remove fairings
2. Remove exhaust
3. Cut cat from header (measure first)
4. Clean out the catalyst in the header
5. Bolt/weld on new y-pipe.

OH SNAP, MR. Knowitall doesn't know it all. Adorable.

A catalytic converter heats up the exhaust flowing through it to "clean" it of any harmful contaminants. Take a laser thermometer on any vehicle and check the temp before and after the cat. It should be well over 100º difference.

Viper guys do this as well b/c the cats sit right under the door sill and warm the entire interior compartment.
