not bad for a day when everyone was having issues trying to pre-order. It took me almost 4 hours to finally get mine in with premier!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/600-000-iphone-4s-pre-ordered-apple-apologizes-for-issues/

We were amazed last night to see both Apple and AT&T sell out of iPhone 4 pre-order units (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/apple-iphone-4-pre-orders-now-sold-out/) despite the sustained ordering issues (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/iphone-4-pre-orderers-overwhelm-servers-world-on-the-brink-of-e/), and now we know why: Apple managed to move 600,000 iPhones in just a single day. Yes, that's a lot -- Apple says it's the largest number of pre-orders it's ever taken in one day, and AT&T says it's ten times as many orders as it took for the iPhone 3GS. It's not all sunshine and roses, though; Apple's also apologizing to the large numbers of people who simply couldn't get through yesterday, and AT&T's suspended pre-orders (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/atandt-suspends-iphone-4-pre-orders-altogether/) entirely until the device is in stock. We're guessing AT&T might also be putting the stopper on things while it gets those pesky security issues (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/iphone-4-pre-order-mess-takes-a-sinister-turn-with-privacy-breac/) under control, but there's a chance the carrier is just trying to deal with the insane order volume coming from Apple's servers -- it served up 13 million eligibility checks yesterday, shattering the previous record by three times. All in all, it looks like Apple has a hot item on its hands here -- almost too hot to handle. Here's Apple's full statement:

Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

AT&T suspends iPhone 4 pre-orders altogether, says they were ten times 3GS' numbers

600,000 sounds a bit high to me.

Its possible, but what they are saying is that roughly 12,000 people per state ordered one on the first day.

I can't see them posting false numbers for the sake of it. Yes that would be 12,000 people per state but then look at the probable amounts ordered from cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, etc. and I would say the number is completely believable.

Why not? Sprint did (http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/06/14/sprint-cans-employee-for-leaking-evo-4g-sales-numbers/)

highly unlikely since they have pushed back delivery dates from june 24th to july 2nd and now to july 14th! ATT has stopped taking orders at all!

unlike android phones apples does not need to make up sales numbers, they actually sell that many! lol

the sales numbers equate to almost 8 phones pre-ordered a second! you have to account for people ordering multiples

Yeah, 600k is a wee bit different than 66k over 2 days

Yeah I agree, I don't see them posting false numbers like that. They did, like Troy said, end up pushing the date back and stopped taking preorders all together.

600,000 still sounds high.

Apple doesn't need to inflate their sales numbers, but that doesn't mean that they don't. In my experience, the bigger the company, the bigger the whoppers they tell.

I'd put money on the supposition that they inflated the numbers in this case.

This is right. They are on pace to sell some rediculous about like 1. something million units in the first month.
