Hey I need an idea of what GPS units are worth a damn.
I've only used the stuff on my phone and now have the need for something in my truck.
I've heard everything Garmin is good. I don't need it to do a bunch of crazy stuff but I want it reliable. Bang for the buck type thing.
Thanks

Honestly, I've got the Tomtom 720 and love it. I would recommend the Tomtom 340 or 740 LIVE series. You do have to pay an extra fee per year for the internal internet connection if you want it but have like a three month trial. The cool thing about it is that instead of POI's, you can have it hit Google to find where you want to go, it will find it on the internet and pull the information, so a constantly evolving POI database. Plus, when it find that, it pulls the weather and traffic information when forming the route and lets you know if anything changes as you're travelling. Both of those models also have lifetime Maps upgrades. Getting really good reviews, too.

I have tom tom Rider on my bike and it's decent but Overall I have to say Looking at my dad's Gamin Gps there mapping system is vastly better on map's vs the Tel Atlas map's. I have a Navigation system in my truck and went out with fam to Florida with 3 car's all following each other . The Gamin has way better routes then the Factory Honda accord Gps and my Truck. Garmin mapping and plotting seems pretty efficient in my book and the features like bluetooth and the traffic updates are pretty cool as well. Gps are always changing but content wise I would go with Garmin

^ The reviews are nuts on these things, lol. Like Microsoft vs Apple.

LOL true just purchased an apple Iphone4 vs my old window's phone I got tired of dealing with Microsoft bug's. I hope Apple is a hell of a lot better vs Windows mobile change is good. Phone arrives July 17th.

How old is the Rider you're using and how current is it? And is it using the IQ Logic Routing?
With the IQ Logic, I'm finding the estimated to reality on arrival is getting really damn close. Like I said, the biggest thing I like about the Tomtom is the LIVE function with POI based on the internet and realtime traffic. The traffic is a big one for me, especially around Atlanta.

Well I have waiting long enough to get one. I know GA like the back of my hand, literally, Department of Corrections work will put you in some crazy areas. I figured since I have a rollout next week for a new customer from Ft. Lauderdale,FL to Houston,TX I better be safe than sorry. With 20 different stops along the way I don't want to be driving in circles!

My map's are pretty current 2009 Map's for my TomTom rider first edition. The unit is Ok as far as mapping is generalized but I find it lacking certain detail's the Garmin units would retain like better routing . Overall Nothing bad on TomTom it's the same sofeware My Truck retain's for it's map's and Xm Navigation . Yes Traffic is a mess in this city why I retain a navigation unit in the first place and for Bluetooth as well.

I'm guessing it does, but just asking, does your Rider implement the IQ Logic with the routing? If not, that's a big difference. My 720 got MUCH better after the IQ Logic came into play.

I'm really not sure On that question and I'll check that out.
I'm a Garmin fan. There units are easy to use and pretty accurate. I'm sure all makes offer different features depending on what you want to pay. Garmin's customer service is incredible. They supported my 2610 broken remote well after the warranty expired without me having to ask. Check out www.gpscity.com Great pricing & selection as well as good service.

garmin nuvi's are a really good bang for the buck...
I have a refurbished Garmin nuvi 1490T that I got from Amazon for under $200. It has a 5 inch screen and comes with a 1 year warranty and free traffic - was the best deal I found for that price range.

Go with Tom tom After weeks of research I bought a tom tom for are trip to florida last week. Worked great best bang for your buck. We got a 350m. for 160. The thing that turned me away from garmin is after nuvi 265w all there new stuff as really bad firmware problems of shuting the unit down and not coming back on for hours. Check amazon and just there are hundreds of reviews on there for diffrent models having this problem. Which to me is a big no no. Garmin said they fixed this problem but I ready that alot of people where still having problems even with the fix. Good luck

when i was shopping for a gps around 3 years ago, garmin had the fastest processing. unfortunately, map upgrades weren't cheap. there are many web sites that compare the latest gps units. i have a garmin (forget the model number) but i'm due for a more current and larger screen model. the real time traffic update comes free with garmin. it uses the lighter socket cord as the traffic report antenna.
all updates were web based and it also has an SD slot. i'm pretty sure it was a nuvi model. i only use it when going on vacation (it's also fun to use on cruises).
