Need references for a local painter to do my race bike. 2 colors-metallic platinum and metallic green(I like house of kolors organic green and platinum). New plastics and tank to be painted. Need by March 12. Send me a price or a name and # please. Note: I'm looking to stay under $500 so don't waste my time with anything over that. I'll do it myself if i don't find someone in the next day or 2.

And by local you mean? The dude that painted my bike is in Douglasville. Pretty reasonable prices and he does an excellent job. You can see some of his work at nationalsuperbike.com. Hope this helps.

Good luck! If you want house of kolor, or any decent paint for that matter, you are looking at more than that.
Nikk, have you even thought about calling OverTwoCustoms??
This is for your racebike, right?

Yes Toodles...called him right after posting this.... saw his website and saw $995 for a custom paint job and posted this thread.... then decided to call and check with him anyways. I'm gonna run my stuff up there today or tomorrow to see what we can do.... Glad I ignored his site and called!!!
Woodk6100- you'd be surprised how reasonable you can buy hok colors! $130 for 2 colors(qt each)
big difference between custom paint and race bodywork paint. you should know that!

Yes and no...depends on who's painting it... Talked to a racer that paid $1200+ for his paint job. You know him.... Up at hfd1...
LOL, no, thats a CUSTOM paintjob on a race bike. A typical "race paintjob" runs between $300 and $400 bucks. That will get you a pretty damn nice paint job from most bike shops that do race bodywork. Thats typically 2 colors, clearcoat and number plates. Price starts going up if you want bodylines and graphics done.
Now, if youre wanting a PRO paintjob on something youre more than likely gonna throw down the track, then by all means, spend upwards of $1000 or more and get ya some!

There is a lot of differences of opinion on paint jobs in general. That being said its hard to relay the differences to potential customers online.
"Custom Paint" - Custom color schemes not stock. Custom artwork specific to your bike. Quality materials used.
"Factory Refinishing" - Making old or damaged paint look like new or stock paint
"Average paint jobs" - Basic color selection from a mid grade paint.
Prices will vary dramatically from shop to shop because each painter puts a price on their time. The only thing you cant argue with is the price of paint. HOK paint runs $50 - 100 / qt depending on the color. 1 Quart of paint is plenty to paint a bike. A lot of HOK paints , especially candy colors require a 3 stage process - Base coat - Mid coat - Clear coat - raising price of the overall paint job.
For track bodywork HOK isnt going to be a painters first choice of colors. Nobody seems to stock the paint, its price point raises costs. PPG, Standox, and Chromabase paints can offer a similar color to the HOK at a more affordable price point.
Now, if you are comparing prices to prices.
*prices are approx and for discussion purposes only*
1 quart paint - $75
1 Pint Reducer - $35
1 quart Primer - $35
1 quart Clear - $40
Clear coat activator - $20
1 gallon Laquer thinner - $12
Misc sandpaper and tape- $20
Total - $237 materials.
So now factor in time and you got yourself a $500 paint job.
Where the shops can generate any profit is by buying materials in bulk and managing quantities needed along with proper prep and painting procedures.
So when you look at paint costs from $300-600 you have to factor in everything from start to finish. A paint job that will last and look great often comes from the prep and finish work put into the bodywork itself.
I've painted bikes from $300 to $1800 and everywhere in between. In the end it comes down to how busy the shop is and how much my time is worth.

Big  for Lorne at Over Two... Called him, he waited for me to get him the bodywork to him after work.. after 7pm... charging me a very fair price and says it should be back by the weekend! In on Wed night and out by the weekend. Gotta say that's a nice turn around. Looking forward to the results! :handclap:
