View Full Version : Bazazz Quick Shifter Question

I just acquired a bike that already has a Bazazz Quick Shifter set up on it. It's probably not a feature that I would get otherwise, but hey.. since it's there, might as well have a little fun with it, right?
I had the bike at Roebling over the weekend, and took it pretty easy just getting used to the bike... didn't use the quick shifter much but tried it out a few times. My question is, for those who have experience with quick shifters in general, is how are the shifts supposed to "feel"?
As I upshifted through the gears without using the clutch, I felt and heard the spark getting cut, but the gear transition felt a little clunky... almost like it was banging into the next gear. Is that normal? Also, how much additional wear and tear does using a quick shifter have on the transmission over normal gear changes with a clutch?
For reference, the bike is an 08 GSXR600. Thanks in advance for any help.

You are not even suppose to notice the shifts from my previous experience...You might need to set it up again...Did it come with the Bazzaz Auto tune and all that other jazz? If not i have the disk that you can install or you can either go to the Bazzaz website and download it...I have the rest of the bazzaz components but not the QS...

THANKS for the response and the offer. Yep, it's the full thing with auto tune, traction control, and quick shift.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say it may need to be set up again. Are you talking about setting the sensitivity of the switch or setting the time it cuts the spark, or something else?
I downloaded the software from the site, but have not taken the time to do anything with it yet. I plan to one of these next couple weekends though. The unit has a USB cable, so I guess the interface is as simple as plugging in, right?

Cool...yes it is a plugin stating that you have the bung still welded to your exhaust....I know in the software there is a part of it, where you can change the settings on the QS. Im pretty sure it was set up to the previous riders discretion. Make sure the bike is on...as in the bike running and you can do your mods from there...Its fun as hell..I have about 2-3 setup that i can change...like my trackday set up, mtn set up, etc....Its addictive mane...

Should be smooth....under full acceleration... It is a bit abrupt if you aren't in the throttle. It also doesn't work below a certain rpm. Check the ign cutout settings as stated previously. It should be fractions of a second. Might have a default setup to opt to. As clutches wear, guys increase the cutout otherwise you might run into missed shifts and such.
You use your clutch for downshifts though, in case you were wondering.

That may be the issue right there... When I tested it out, I did it a few times at lower rpm's thinking that if something was set incorrectly, I wouldn't break anything. I tried using it one time shifting from 5th to 6th at full throttle on the straightaway, but not near redline... rpm's were around 12,000. That's when I felt the biggest clunk, and didn't try it again after that.
That's it, now I'm looking forward to digging into it this weekend. Thanks Nikk and JSKeezy... I'll probably have more questions later.

I'd hope he has it GP...but some keep std shift? No idea why after experiencing GP. Head down, shift down...head up, shift up...
Nikk, some people prefer standard shift over GP (Hell, Mladin uses it, and he gets around pretty good).
As for the "clunky", yea, if youre not riding aggressive (typically full pin throttle) then youre better off just using the clutch to shift.
Once youre doing that, if it still feels a bit clunky or abrupt, most quickshifters have a setting in the software whereby you can adjust the "kill time", ie: the length of time in miliseconds that you want the ignition killed while you make the shift.
The bazaaz is a pretty sweet setup, ive not used the bazaaz stuff, my bike has all Dynojet stuff, but everyone ive talked to about the bazaaz loves it.
QS's are pretty much for track use only. Hence why i personally think anyone that puts one on their street bike is wasting their money. Sure, it works, but WTF do you need it for? You need that extra .001 of a second you'll gain with a QS to get you from one red light to the next? Bout like putting race gas in your bike, if youre motor isnt built for it, you may as well be lighting up $50 bills and watch them burn.

It's set up with GP shift. That was another thing I was trying out for the first time Saturday. Going into the day, I was thinking it would be the first thing changed... back to standard, but hell, I loved it.. I rode the SV (standard shift pattern) during the last session, and left there with plans to flip it to GP as well.
I agree with you too Todd. This is not my street bike, and I wouldn't ever bother with anything like it for the street. Really, at my riding level, I don't benefit from it on the track either, but I got a smokin deal on the bike already set up that way... so I'm goin' with it.

Minus well unless you want me to show you how to work the QS on the track...show you some great powerslides
oh, by all means, dont remove it, especially if its your dedicated track bike. Hell, after racing for 10 years, i FINALLY did the QS thing for the first time last year. Im just old school, and have always been able to clutchless upshift damn near as fast as i could with a QS, but i gotta admit, its def. much easier, and less wear and tear on the transmission cus if you dont get the revs right not having it, it clutchless upshifting w/o the QS will eventually f up your tranny. Hell, im still on a bike with no slipper clutch. Now, THAT is something i think i could benefit from. All the "new" bikes have it, but, i cant afford a new bike, and since im not out there chasing points anymore, just cant justify $800 on a slipper clutch for my bike, hell, i can barely afford to put tires on it.
And yes, im with Nikk and MOST people that tried GP shift and loved it. For me, especially for racing and track riding, once you get used to it, makes it MUCH easier to shift, especially when youre having to sometimes shift mid corner while leaning the bike. I do remember my wife standing on the wall at Tally the weekend i made the switch. I was using an OuterExtremes trackday to get used to GP shift. Wanted to make sure that by the end of the day, that shifting with GP shift was second nature rather than having to think about it. As i came out of the last corner onto the front straight, as she's on the wall, i needed to upshift. Well, i have a brain fart, and with the bike screaming at about 14K rpms on the exit, i shifted the wrong way...... Damn near bucked me right off the bike, and i remember as i was trying to get the thing under control, i glanced at the wall where she was standing, and her mouth was on the ground, she just KNEW i was fixing to bin it right in front of her. I was lucky and pulled in the clutch before it threw me completely off, but i couldnt help but laugh my ass off down the entire straight with the image of the look on her face burnt into my brain. We still laugh about that to this day.
