Is this a good track to do my first one? How many do both days of the event?
its not just my opinion, but the opinion of ALOT of people, its probably the best in the SE, Jennings being #2. Tally is 1.3 miles with 10 turns. Very technical, but basically flat, you can see thru all the corners, and there's plenty of run-off room.
As for both days, especially if its your first time, you'd probably enjoy doing both over just one. The first day you'll spend learning the track, getting over the "track intimidation" factor, and just generally feel much more comfortable on the 2nd day while everything is still fresh on your mind. As for the aftermath, you'll be sore for a couple of days afterwards, but just like marathon sex, its SOOOOOOOooo worth it. :D

I know I know. Car going to the shop Tuesday and I might not need a clutch so ill be straight. Todd are you going to that Tally day in September? I think Bargy instructors are suppose to be there.
Sept. or this one in Oct. that this thread is about? There isnt one in Sept., and if its this event (Oct 16/17), yes, i'll be there for that one. Remember, this is a CO-hosted event between Bargy and X-Act. Bargy will be doing the school on Sat., and X-Act will be running the trackday both days. I'll be there instructing the school on Sat. and doing the "question/answer" stuff for the novices along with the other instructors for both days.

Laz, if you are really going to show, try to get everything done before you get to the track. The first time is exciting enough without adding stress about getting your shit ready. Do everything the week before relaxed and at home.

Yes Bill I'm really going to be there. It'll be like seeing a unicorn in real life.
Bike is pretty much set up already. When the time comes I'll take off mirrors, tape lights, pull fuses, etc. I'm just wondering if my tire will still be good. Its good now but I want to keep riding a bit. If I bring a tire with me I wondering if someone will be there to mount and balance it. I guess I'll just get a new one beforehand.

Alicia, ya I put on new BT-003 RS tires (110 front and 140 rear) and they are so sticky! I used them in the mountains last weekend and couldn't believe the confidence that they gave me in high speed turns. I would recommend them. They will only last 3k to 4k miles however.
Lazarus
08-24-2010, 10:56 AM
The 003RS are pretty good from what I hear as well. A guy I know rode nothing but Michelins but switched over to the 003RSs and really likes them. I will give them a go once I can't get the Michelins for so cheap.
bigb996
08-24-2010, 11:10 AM
i cant say for the 003's but the bt006s were pretty solid but they melted badly and caused you to get some sliding. I just swapped to Q2s and they did phenomenal at road A. On a 250 i would think any sticky tire would be good its probably more difficult to wear them like you would on a supersport.

STT had some great deals on Michelin tires. A couple weeks ago a buddy bought a set for $200 but there was a set of Q2s here for sale for the same. I bought two sets of Pures @ $200 set. Too bad I put a set on a buddy's bike.

Alicia, ya I put on new BT-003 RS tires (110 front and 140 rear) and they are so sticky! I used them in the mountains last weekend and couldn't believe the confidence that they gave me in high speed turns. I would recommend them. They will only last 3k to 4k miles however.
k...ill try em..did you buy em from overtwocustom?

Oh oh! I have another question too. Is it ok if my exhaust is ziptied/safety wired to the bike? For some reason I dont have the bolts that hold it to the subframe, lost them doing the FE.

Zip tie will melt... you should be able to pick up cheap bolts to fit it at home de pot ... but if nothing else safety wire will suffice I imagine (although I'm not in tech for this trackday so dont quote me)
I'll probably make this day with both my F4i (stunt, commuter and track beyatch) and my yz450f supermoto =)

Yea zip tie will probably melt, maybe thats why it doesnt' last more than a couple days. Worst case I could run to the dealer and see how much the bolts case if I can't find one at the depot. I hate trying to find bolts.

Michelin (and Dunlop, Pirelli, Bridgestone..etc.) have no two-year is fresh policy, Pete... my god, tires sit in manufacturers warehouses after a production run for a year sometimes before they are even shipped to various markets and then may sit at a dealer or distributor for a year and then may have a service life on a bike of 4 years or more..... Street compound tires (not slicks/Rains) are "manufacturer fresh" four-plus years and then after that it depends on how they are stored. Climate controled warehouses do the job nicely, your buddies trailer or your garage.. maybe not depends on the temps and humidity.
Sorry about the several edits. For anyone who wonders... We are a Michelin Motorcycle Tire Distributor and Michelin makes sure we stay educated on product specs, including "freshness".

Since I've been running Bridgestones, haven't seen a tire older then 2yrs old from the current year.....granted, in theory if you keep a tire in a controlled atmosphere, no temperature extremes, the tire should be good for many years....
Just to educate those who don't know, if you look on a tire and see a number like 4208 or 1209 that would be the 42nd week in 2008 or the 12th week in 2009 for a production date.
Another good test on a tire is stick your finger nail in the rubber, if it bounces back it's good, if it stays deformed, I wouldn't risk it. ;)
street tires, yea, 4 or 5 years old is no big deal. A tire your putting on the track? Dont kid yourself, and Monte, im sorry, you can blow that smoke up some of these guys ass with being "edumacated" and all, but for "race" rubber, or "trackday" rubber, no, you wont find Dunlop Pirelli, or Bridgeston selling tires at the track over 2 years old (and i dont know of any of the guys running Michellin that buy tires from the SE vendor that are older than that, but i could be wrong). "my god man", you want to BS these guys into believing that tire manf. store tires in an "atmospherically controled" warehouse? THAT'S a good one! Yea, whatever the atmosphere is outside, it'll be even hotter inside, same goes for the cold after those tires have been sitting there on a shelf for several years, hitting close to if not at triple digits in the summer and then freezing and below in the winter. Like i said, for a street tire that is designed to go thru literally hundreds of heat cycles, its simply not the case with race rubber.
You guys can believe what you want, but there is a reason pretty much every person that races, looks at the date codes on the tires when they purchase them, and most wont use any that are older than 2 years.

Michelins warehouse and ours as well (so is STG's) where tires are in long-term storage are climate controled to avoid temerature extremes.
With full race tires/full competition models fresher is absolutely perceived as better. When racing at the highest levels a .5% performance difference is something that might be an advantage.
Michelin did extensive testing three years ago by having their test riders ride tires of the exact same models (fulll race and performance street) but vastly different build dates the results did not support a large difference is performance/traction.

Its good to have it set up but if you aren't able to I wouldnt worry too much. I would have ran on my untuned suspension as I was used to it. Basically they (whoever is thats going to do it) measures your sag and such and then adjust a couple things on the front and rear. My setup was way to soft so they adjusted it to hard. From what I was told by a guy at Traxxion is for track set up stock suspension they will go all the way hard and back it off a bit. Not much you can do to stock setups.

Basically those measures are to ensure that if you do have an accident you dont ruin the track surface for others behind you. I don't think novice has to use water wetter. According to Pete in his Barber thread: "Advanced and Intermediate group riders can not have any glycol and/or ethyl based coolant in their bikes."
Be thankful you can just use silicone on the fill and drain bolt and not safety wire.

It all depends. If its soft now and you go to hard for the track its going to feel alot different. It will take some getting used to. If anything mark where it is currently so you can return it there if need be.
Angela, has your bike ever been set up for YOU since youve owned it?
Really, the ideal thing would just be to scoot it over to MPH or whereever you trust someone that knows how to do it, and get the rider sag and static sag numbers set for your weight. At your level right now, that is the main thing that you (or ANYONE for that matter), should have done. That is your baseline setup. Its a process that takes 3 people (you to sit on the bike, one to hold the bike up while youre on it, and one to take the measurements and do the adjustments.).
Can this be done at the track, sure it can, do i know how to do it, ehhhhh, sorta, but i personally dont like fooling with that type of stuff on other peoples bikes. I'll be happy to help someone if THEY know exactly what measurements to take and what the sag numbers should be, but if someone isnt 100% sure how, then your best bet is to take it and have it done (its pretty cheap to just have the sag set up), or else just leave it the way it is and ride.

Also, I'll be running novice so do I absolutely have to do the water wetter and silicone? This is not a requirement with other organizations for novice. Just curious why I need to do this.
Well here's the skinny, other orgs don't require it and they are rolling the dice that as a novice you won't have a bad enough get off that coolant will spill. Here's the problem, any glycol based coolant, which almost all are except waterwetter and water, if it gets on the track is worse, yes worse, then an oil spill. There is no absorbent like kitty litter to suck it up and it IS slipperier then oil. So if by chance someone goes down and coolant spills out on the track, the potential to ruin every other riders day is there. So this is why we are adamant about this issue. I don't think you would want everyone else at the track pissed at you for dumping coolant on the track if you had a get off and spilled coolant.
]The process to change is pretty easy, just get a clean bucket and remove the hose clamp on your lowest coolant hose connection. Take the cap off your radiator, pull the hose and put it in the bucket. You can reuse the coolant if you use a clean bucket to drain it in, just use a funnel and pour it in a clean water jug(s). Put the hose back on with the clamp and fill your bike with distilled water/waterwetter combo and your good to go. Some will flush their system with distilled water several times to get all the glycol out, but that's not necessary, the amount of glycol left vs. water put in usually neutralizes it all.

Yea I flushed my system with distilled and refilled using WW and distilled water. It was very easy although a little messy since I dont have a stand or a lift.

@Todd...thanks for the nuggets-o-knowledge and no I haven't had it set up for me. I bought it bone stock with 267 miles on it from a guy that used it to go from his house to the pool in his subdivision (geesh). I have an appt at noon on Saturday at MPH to get my suspension set up! woot-woot!
@Pete...rules are rules and I will mos def abide by them. I was just wondering the rationale behind them. Seems like an easy enough modification (for my hubby LOL) I'm a typical female rider that just knows how to gas him up but I'm working towards being more mechanically inclined!
Thanks all!

Not happy about missing this one. Pete puts on top rate events. If you are on the fence about it, trust me when I tell you, you will not be disappointed

I don't think that org has a membership card. Atleast, I didn't get one. Does AMA count?

OK so I got my suspension set up by MPH and BOY WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Coming from an F4I I didn't know any better and just thought that was how the GSXR was supposed to handle being all uber aggressive and what not. MPH said it was almost as soft as it could be and made control a chore. I took it for a test ride after adjustments were made and didn't want to come back to the shop (but of course I had to pay the folks!) I feel like the bike is an extension of my legs now where before I had to fight with it to make it do what I wanted. woot-woot!
Lil Tally here I come!!! :gheydance:
