In the past, BTC-5 or -6 as it were, when you clicked the "Insert Link" button, it would pop a dialog box for you to paste the link in, then it would insert the correct syntax into your post PLUS it would highlight a section of text that could be replaced with whatever text you wanted to actually appear as opposed to the raw url.
Was that a hack? Is it something that only happens in certain edit modes? I still get the dialog but not the chance to change the displayed text to something besides the url.
For example, http://www.georgiasportbike.com/showthread.php?334-Family-Fun-Ride-Sun.-April-25-for-the-Dream-House is a link to a thread. Also notice how the underline continues when I start typing at the end of the URL. (http://www.georgiasportbike.com/showthread.php?334-Family-Fun-Ride-Sun.-April-25-for-the-Dream-House)
It only stops if you add a CR.

Maybe, that typing behavior is the key. That is, maybe I can replace the whole displayed text with something new without breaking the link. Let's try that:
Now typing over the text that was inserted. (http://www.georgiasportbike.com/showthread.php?334-Family-Fun-Ride-Sun.-April-25-for-the-Dream-House)
hmm. That preserves the link but you still have to add a CR to end the underline/color.

So, while I'm here talking to myself, I also see that when I click on the "edit" button, I still see the wysiwig display and not the underlying formatting and syntax. I'll try changing my settings away from wysiwig.
discovered that you have to be careful when replacing the link text or you will delete the link as well as the text. (http://www.georgiasportbike.com/showthread.php?334-Family-Fun-Ride-Sun.-April-25-for-the-Dream-House)
Aha, I changed from the Enhanced editor to the Standard editor and now I see all the syntax for the link above when I edit the post. I'll try a new post.

Interesting. When I was set for the enhanced editor, clicking New Post went to the quick post box no matter what button I clicked. But I could get to a full editor by clicking Go Advanced.
Let's try the link insert in this mode.
Now it works the way it used to. I can see the syntax in the editor and the display text is highlighted. (http://www.georgiasportbike.com/showthread.php?334-Family-Fun-Ride-Sun.-April-25-for-the-Dream-House)

I type out the code by hand anyway.. quicker for me to do that (I type 120+ wpm) than to move my hands from the keyboard to the mouse and back.

I type pretty fast but learned in the pre computer days so my fingers aren't good at the special characters like brackets etc. Some things, like AutoCAD, I do a lot on the keyboard. It has keyboard equivalents for almost all the commands which are quicker in some cases.
