So i go to Vortex/varsity/felienies{sp?} a good bit .... Well last night i left turner field a little early from the normal time and headed back home in north ga. I first saw 1 guy on a gsxr pulled over by atl pd . He didnt look happy , hope he wasnt going to fast. Luck has it i keep it about 80 most the way home . I crest the hill right past pleasent hill and bam... 5 yes count them 5 GCPD all blacked out just sitting there . They were 100% there waiting on a few fast moving bikes. Then they had 2 normal cars sitting down a exit.. Just be carefull if your heading up north from atlanta or p-hill on thursdays! I used to be able to scoot when i passed Jimmy Carter all the way home...

This is not a rant i could care less as i dont really speed a lot now . Just trying to save someones night....or worse

Yeah the cops aren't dumb. They know what's up. I'm with you though, I'm not much of a speeder on highways.

They've been doing that for a while. All blacked out and waiting like vultures. Squeezed by them last year ....luckily

As i posted i dont ride like a dumbass..You dont have to be riding like a dumbass to get pulled over on a sport bike for speeding. Also you ever think someone who might have joined after 2001 might not know..?

The local police force is no newcomer to the large mass of bikes speeding down 85 on Thursdays. I never really understood going 140mph on the highway myself but to each their own. I'll keep it within the limits and sleep comfy in my own bed at night.

Some people, maybe me, might argue that if you get pulled over for speeding on an interstate highway in GA, you were, by definition, riding like a dumbass.

Ahem... I seem to remember someone on a Kawi 636, riding a standup wheelie at 85mph from Jimmy Carter through Spagetti Junction without ever putting the front tire down... ;-)

In Lorne's defense, he was not being on a high horse.

I think that he had a flat front tire and was just trying to keep it off the ground until he could get to a gas station and refill it. ;-)

Man let me tell you kids something about crazy.....

:P.

There was a time not so long ago that my ninja did some pretty killer highway wheelies. You might even go as far as to say they were a few miles long. I may have rode wheelies in traffic, in front of schools, right on by police stations... and maybe there were a few occasions that the men in blue wanted to stop and commend me for my stunting abilities.

However......

Those days have come to a standstill. I have seen more people arrested, fined, and crashed in the last 2 years that have come through the shop over stupid BS that I really toned it down. Before I parted out the 636 I mainly rode wheelies in the parking lot and rarely on the streets. The R1 is wicked fast and has more power than anyone really needs for the street and I have paid my fair share of fines and spent my fair share of nights in the holding cell to know that I enjoy my own bed at night.

Now if you come in to my shop talkin shit and want to put your money where your mouth is we might bend the rules a little bit :D

LOL

That was a funny night following you, watching you have to lean off the side of the bike in a verticle wheelie because the wind kept getting up under you and blowing you to the side. Crazy stuff.

I am sure that being a daddy is also a factor. And Dan. You can't leave Dan alone, he needs you. :-)

You gotta get off that sucker or the wind will take you away! I can only imagine the wrath that Dan would have on customers if he spent more than an hour alone at the shop, lol.

Im sure there will be a day when the R1 is killing wheelies down 85, just not a day in the near future.

GCPD all blacked out just sitting there .

Does anyone else realize that this is illegal? Unless they are GSP, they must be visible from 500 feet which means running lights at night...

Did I miss the part where cops don't have to play by their own rules anymore? Or is it that they are unaware of the rules?

It's that 5% of the public know the rules, and are willing to fight. The other 95% just send in their fines. Bam, free revenue.

Hmmm. Have you every seen anybody try to argue that rule in court with regard to a car without lights at night. On most interstates, there's probably enough ambient light from streetlights etc for them to argue that they are visible. Does the law say they have to be identifiable or just visible?

In other words, you grew up and became responsible. :D

You're right, Lorne, it really isn't worth the possible problems, or death, involved now. It truly isn't.

yes, prior precedent(case law) has ruled that a cop car must have it's running lights on at night to comply with the law.

ocga 40-14-7 or something close to that... 1-14 of that section deals with speed detection devices...

i know when i lived in henry co, the cops regularly sat way back near the tree line on 75, especially in mcdonough. dark blue cars, in pitch black night. you couldnt see them til you were 50 feet from them, and of course then it was too late. no running lights, just an ambush!!

It would interesting to see someone plow into the side of one hiding in the darkness. Lets say you have some emergency vehicle trouble and veer off the road. Low and behold an officer is sitting there with no lights on in the dead of night and you strike the vehicle only trying to avoid injuring anyone else on the freeway.

I can see the argument. 500 feet they are probably visible if you are standing on the side of the road looking for them. However, at night with headlights shining at you from passing cars, other traffic in the area, and changing road conditions, the last thing you are doing is looking for blacked out cop cars on the shoulder.

Agreed. I just hope that they won't cite the guy in addition to all of the medical problems they'll have even from a meager 35 mph slam into a solid unmoving object.

I have argued it in Gwinnett County and won. They have to be visible for 500 feet and lights on at night. Cop pulled me one day for speeding. He asked for my license and I asked where he was sitting. Since he was buried in the bushes and you couldn't see him until you were 20ft from him, they threw the ticket out.

And FYI... Gwinnett County has a "NO CHASE POLICY" on bikes. They can clock you, pull out and hit their lights, but if you nail it, they have to STOP PURSUIT. GSP, Lawrenceville, Norcross, Dekalb, and many others CAN and WILL chase to the death. It is a misdemeanor if you get caught and unless you have your tag mounted "properly", they'll never see it at night.

DO the math... If you (the rider) are running 140mph. How long will it take a police cruiser to catch you if their cars are governed at 120? Exactly... they can't. Now that's your standard cruiser. GSP, however, is governed at 160. Even then, how long will it take GSP to catch you if you are running 140 or even 120? Try 52 min at 140 and 45 min at 120.

...Not that I 'would' run, but that I 'could' and feel really bad for the guy on the katana! hahaha!
