It's kinda like a black box, it doesn't save EVERYTHING you do like a typical Airline box, but it keeps the data just before and just after the wreck.

Tells the investigators the speed you were travelling, when you hit the brakes, etc...

It's pretty cool if ya ask me.

They had the black box a wile. Toyota latest recall and the fix isn't working more report's about this problem even with the so called recall. I have a Tundra and Like it but have to say Toyota lately hasn't been very good on there recent cost saving ideal's.

Yuo, they've been on some cars for over 10 years now. All proprietary info for each manufacturer.

BMW has it in their Keys.

My friend took his BMW to get some work done due to some computer failure and all they did is pop the key in a machine and saw his RPM records and all kinda data.

and as long as I know if you have a OEM NAV in your car the insurance can check the last speed in case of an accident and can refuse to pay you.

No, the BMW only holds service records in the key. There is crash/driving input info held in other control units even the dealer can't read. The FSE's have to come in with their double knot secret laptops to read the info.

The BMW key also has the VIN listed so they can look up any past warranty claims on teh car since it was purchased new but there is no additional data acquisition with the key.

Reading that report really does make it sound like Toyota has been pretty shady on this and has been well aware of the issues for a long time.

detroit diesel has had data logging in there 60 sr for 20 years now. it records 30 sec. before and after a wreck. i rember a wrecked dump truck on our lot that a group of lawyers were around when we extracted the info. some big lawsuit.
