So I'm starting a new hobby, mountain biking :)
While doing some research, I noticed that there were no dedicated forums for mountain biking in Ga, so I decided to create my own. If you're local (or even if you're not) come sign up and help spread the word.
I just created the site a few nights ago, so there is still a lot of work to do, but the forum is fully functional :jam2:

P.S. I OKed this post with Todd before posting :Poke:

Did you check out SORBA's forum? http://www.sorba.org/forum/
But yeah -- a good bit of us are into it. I'm either at Blankets, Rope Mill, Mt. Tabor, or Big Creek 3 - 5 days a week.

I'm into it but haven't been out in forever. Need to get back out there to get in better shape! Usually at Blankets or Big Creek occasionally

Mountain and roadie here. Been doing more cycling this year then motorcycle riding. Actually going to suffer through the six gap next weekend. should get back on the mountain bike at blankets creek a bit more after that. Also hit up Bear Creek, Pisgah, Tsali, Unicoi, and Bull Mtn quite regularly during the year.

I have a Santa Cruz Superlight with Mavic SL wheels that I never use. The trails are too far away to ride during the week for me. I use to help build trails (not in this state) and ride a lot then I moved here and got married.

ya $200 or around there .. some people is not made of money.. lol.. did not know if anyone knew of a place where they got used bikes.. but honestly i didnt ask for discrimination more in the line of you cant get a good bike for 200 now if u had like 400 or w.e then ya.. but oh well.. i found a bike on craigs list..its a K2 sidewinder 17.5 disc breaks etc.. think im going to go look at it...

$200 is going to be tough -- but isn't impossible.
i'd look out for a year or two old specialized hardrock. pretty decently set up beginner bike.
watch craigslist, and sorba's buy/sell forum: http://sorba.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=16&sid=1e7ec5e26c662eb5421fe70f23b210e8
and for $200, i'd stay away from anything with disc brakes. the mechanical disc brakes they use on the cheaper bikes are junk, and will ruin your ride. a well set up v-brake system will serve you 100x better than shit disc.

thanks Wbeck.. the bike i am going to look at is $350 used.. and plus.. who needs breaks.. haha lmao.. but thanks for the advice.. im goign out today and doing some window shopping.. and places like dicks and stuff like that see what they got and prace range compared to the cycle shops..
also on who can give me good service deals.. i never knew u needed a tune up for a bicycle lol.. but i guess if u need it it be worth getting something where they will throw that in for ya..

no one was discriminating! has nothing to do with how much money you have. that's how much they cost. a basic disk hardrock will run you $700 new. You might be able to get a huffy from wal mart for $200 or maybe a beater bike on craigslist!

i guess u didnt read the part where i said used bike.. but its all good.. ill go get me my huffy.. i mean back in the day didnt they have wal mart bikes anyway to do the sport instead of all this high tech crap.. unless u take the sport serious and plan on racing and making a living out of it i dont see the use for paying alot of money for it.. atleast not for my first bike.. it be like buying a brand ducati 1098 for my first bike and have never been on a bike.. just saying pointless...

So you say $200 and look at $350? There are a few things you really don't want to sacrafice even on a beginner bike. But seems like you have it handled and don't need any advice. Also my post was an actual question.
You may want to look here for some details... http://www.georgiamountainbike.com/ (http://www.georgiamountainbike.com/)

yes i read used bike and it's still going to be very tough to get a quality bike for $200! that's what chris and I where saying. For any type of off road riding a cheap bike will not last and may even get you hurt. You don't need a full suspension bike but I wouldn't go any lower than a hard tail with disk brakes. Like I said, the price on those is not even close to $200, and is what I would consider the perfect entry level bike. In fact it is there entry level bike with the only addition being the disk brakes! That's not to say that you won't fall into a great deal some where. I also have a hard rock disk and I wouldn't sell it for less than $400. you can get a non disk one for around $420 but I feel the extra $100 for disk brakes is very very worth it. The don't make anything cheaper! using your argument of it being an 1198, the 1198 version of a mountain bike will run you around $7200. paying $500 may seem pointless to you, but it's not. You are paying for something that will last. Get a cheap one and break it and replace it every year or pay a little extra and have it last a life time, it's up to you.
here is the hardrock..that's as cheap as they get - $420
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=52708&scid=1000&scname=Mountain
hardrock disk - $500 (my suggestion for a starter bike)
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=52709&scid=1000&scname=Mountain
here's your 1198 - $7200

you can probably even find some better deals if you call around. call outspokin bike shop in woodstock and check
the only thing about hardtails is they are called hardtails for a reason. they are hard on your tail! lol ride blankets a few time and you will be begging for a full suspension!

you should drive to roswell and go to Performance bikes(by Andretti's (sp)karting). They have plenty of bikes for you to look at and ask questions. outspoken has a lot high end bikes. Roswell bikes has some used bike outside sometimes. Is also next door to Andretti's.
They have $350(if you can catch them on sale!) new bikes at performance and they come with a service plan.

You guys are beating this guy up.
I can relate a bit so I can understand where he’s coming from. I started mountain biking on a walmart bike 5 yrs ago. I got it for $99 and started going to blankets creek. The reason I did it was because I didn’t know if I was going to like it or even stick with it. I’m not one of those people that go out and get the best of whatever and then find out I don’t like it and try to sell it.
The next year I upgraded to a K2 dual suspension bike from craigslist and after 2 yrs of riding that I know I had outgrown it and decided to go big. Went to Roswell bikes and got a Specialized bike.
What a difference it was, much better suspension, breaks and components.
I go to Blankets and Rope Mill 4 times a week. I think it’s better than spending that time in a gym when the weather is nice outside.
So dude, get a cheap bike start riding. If you then decide you enjoy it, upgrade. don’t spend $1000 on a bike that you are going to just park it in the garage.

you're right. And it seems like every time I go there they've made it smoother or removed more roots or rocks; which kinda sucks.

From experience I would be cautious of buying used bikes. Unless you know what you are looking at. (condition wise) You could ultimately wind up dropping some more cash into making the bike rideable. I do work for a bicycle shop in Smryna and if you have any concerns give me a hollar if you want and I'll do my best to answer any concerns for you. BTW the shops name is A Trail of Wheels 770-438-1150 and ask for Joseph.
