Okay guys, tons of great responses on the powder coating, now another question. Can anyone recommend any alarms for sport bikes (or are they worth the cost)? Bike is kept in a remote controlled gated parking deck (so relatively safe), but I'm thinking about getting lojack or similar installed (both for when it's at home and when I'm out and about in Atlanta).
Any thoughts/comments????
Thanks everyone,
Phil

I have installed the Gorilla Alarm system on quite a few bikes. They have some great features like 7 level shock sensor, tilt sensor, Panic and Warn sensors, LED light, and 2 way pager system.
Keep in mind, if someone wants your bike, they will take it. An alarm will help deter a thief. An even bigger benefit is the 2 way pager alert system. If someone bumps into, touches, or moves the vehicle you will know about it. The 2 way pager system has a 1/2 mile radius.
The Gorilla 7017 model is the way to go. Retails for $228. We sell the alarm for $225 installed.

THanks for the info. Anyone have any personal experience with these? Guess one of my concerns is whether a professional would be able to just cut the alarm and then take their time taking the bike.
Anyone have any experience with bike alarms (positive or negative)????

Waste of $$$.. Invest in a Yacht Chain and lock instead... In a arage Alarm or not all they have to do is push it on a matress and go.. Your bike will be gone in 7 seconds... Keep your bike inside if possible... If you leave it out and someone wants it... They will take it... And they would probally thank you for installing the Alarm for them...

if they can get to the power wires then they can disconnect the alarm pretty easily. Carrying around a heavy chain lock can get tiresome as well. Lock your steering column and park in well lit places around other people.

Unfortunately, my thoughts are about the number of threads we've had here about bikes stolen from controlled access parking decks, frequently with security camera video recording the event. You have to make it hard to steal so they'll move on to an easier target.
Carrying around a heavy chain lock can get tiresome as well. True, but you can have one and leave it at a place where you park daily.

When I had my 600 I had a scorpio alarm installed. It had everything mentioned above, (ignition cut off, perimeter/tilt sensor etc.) It even had a anti-hijacking feature that allowed to to remotely cut the ignition with the remote should someone get me off my bike while its running and take off with it. It is a good deterrent but doesn't make your bike theft proof. IMO I think it is good to have because in my personal experience it came in very handy. It can be a bit pricey tho. My system was about $450. The deadbolt on your front door won't stop someone from breaking into your house but you still lock it when you leave anyway right? The harder it is for someone to take your bike the less likey it will be stolen.
With mine I had hooked up the ignition cutoff switch to the fuel like so if someone did manage to cut the power to the alarm they would also disable the fuel pump so the bike wouldn't start. I think lojack would work the best. I've seen it work for a friend of mine at work who had his bike stolen and recovered because he had lojack.

The real world fact is if somebody wants it they can get it no matter what u do to TRY to secure it. So like some have said your basicly trying to tell the persons looking at it that this isnt gonna be a gravy job so look at a diffrent bike. I personally have a scorpio alarm also and its got all the same stuff, if it had a flashing led it would be great(that really helps scare theifs). I hardly ever take the bike to anyplace that im gonna be gone for some time... other than work. I dont go to the mall, movies ect on the scooter... i like keeping it mine.
So my 2 cents is do some searching and find a REALLY GOOD DEAL on a alarm that will help to scare away theifs.... but dont waste a bunch of money. I have gotten 3 alarms.... 1 with no support(steelmate) was good but it ATE batterys in the remote... like 1 a week. I just got a scorpio i500 and sofar im happy with the $105 invested in it, just wish it had a flashing led to warn wandering eyes. I also got a friend with a 07 r6 a 2way alarm..... after is 06 was stolen from his garage while he was at home sleeping. He has yet to install it.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Hate thought of getting comprehensive insurance since it's $1,300 more a year (for a 2006 GSXR 750), means I'd almost pay for the bike with insurance premiums over the next 4 years (of course, if it gets stolen before then. . . ).
Lots of food for thought.
Thanks,
Phil

check into other insurance companies Phil, comprehensive wasnt much more for me to add through several companies. Kim and Kirk at Ace can hook you up on motorcycle insurance.

$1,300!!! Yeah, you need to check into other insurance companies. Comp on my 05 GSXR 1000 only costs me about $75 a year with Progressive.

Alarms are worth the money for those who dont have a garage or place to park/store it inside. I have a couple friends who have em n they saved their bikes just the other week. And the had em straped into the back of their truck even.
I would recommend a security CABLE over a chain tho. Not only are chains hard to store on the bike (esp ones that are big enough not to be cut by your avg bolt cutters) they are easier to be cut.

You guys are lucky. When I had my 07 600 I was getting charged 5 grand a year for full coverage. Even now the lowest I can find is close to 3 grand a year for full coverage. I only had one speeding ticket in the last 5 years. Maybe when I turn 25 I will finally see better rates.
BTW I've never paid that much, I just had to get liability only which was less than $200 a year

The term "full coverage" generally has no legal definition in an insurance contract. In Georgia, the types of coverage you might have are liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, collision and comprehensive (ignoring bells and whistles like roadside assistance, rental car etc). So saying "full coverage" generally means all of the above. Comprehensive is not the same as full. It protects you against damage not related to things that happen while driving. Collision is typically very expensive for young people who have an actuarially high likelihood of filing a claim. Comprehensive has more to do with where you live, how the vehicle is stored etc.
