View Full Version : I need some dog advice.
My lab/pit mix Fred keeps climbing out of our fence. Yes, climbing not jumping. We have an invisible fence around our entire yard but we also have a chain link fence to put the dogs when we dont want them running around( at night and when we arent home). I have already replaced and fixed sections of the fence where he had ripped the fence apart or broke the top rail. He is stupid strong. I have tried building barriers on top of fence(welded wire etc)...he rips it down, I have tried correction collars... he laughs at those. Now he is not a bad dog at all just wants to be out of the fence area when ever he pleases. When he is out unsupervised he romps through the flower bed and elephant ears and ruins them. I am at my wits end and just about ready to go buy an actual electric fence and install around my chain link so he wont climb it anymore. Any of you have idea's before I buy an electric fence?

Barbwire, or an elect fence will take him one time and he'll never do it again.

Nothing like puting the power to them! I have to keep my dog on a chain inside the 20X20 kennel we have at my dads house. when she is in a bigger pen, she is fine and doesnt try to get out.

Electric fence. had a problem with my dog digging out. Put it up, it popped him twice and now he's wary of getting close to the fence.
you gotta have a good ground, or it won't work for shit. I just tapped into the ground on the power pole.

stick some Rebar at 45deg angle from the fence to the yard, that will discourage them from trying to jump and makes him loose momentum if he runs and jumps. Cheap and Redneckish, should look nice in Flowery Branch

Get some of these.

Attach them angled down instead of up and just put some hardware cloth or chicken wire on them instead of barbed wire.
Or is that what you mean by "barriers on top of the fence"?

High energy dog. You gotta take that sucker somewhere an wear him out. Does he fetch tennis balls? Go to a field and take a tennis racket with balls and wear his ass out.
I don't think the CCI hollowpoints were the right suggestion.

Its not an energy thing. He doesnt get out to run around. He gets plenty of excerise running around with Wilco during the day.

Electric fence. My golden was an escape artist. With the electric fence, all it took was one good pop, and she didn't even try again. They can tell when it's energized. :-)

Tractor Supply has everything you need, and quite reasonably priced. :-)

My sister had the same problem. We put an invisible fence around the chain link fence (attached it to the chain link, they make a kit for this). No problems after that.

I had a Beagle that was the same way. Electric fence around the top and no more problems.

My buddy had a rotti that did this at the house. Built the fence up to 8' and she still got out... best solution I gave him that worked was take a roll of the plastic chicken wire like stuff at home depot/lowes and attach one long edge to the top of the fence(2'-4' wide). Take some type of wire(think steel cable not electrical) and thread it through the other edge of the chicken wire(edge towards the center of the enclosed area). As you pull the wire tighter(use a coupler that you can tighten with a wrench), it will cause the chicken wire to become level creating a sort of ceiling. Worked like a charm!!! She would bounce off when she jumped up and hit it and fell down when she tried to use it to climb over.
This solution works, its cheap, easy to install, and is sure to keep your dog inside without harming him. Use the plastic like chicken wire as the metal could...rust?, break, bend, harm the dog, etc... and the stuff I'm talking about is indestructible.
My buddy now uses the same system in his kennels with 4' chain link fences which still works well.

Have you seen how he gets out of the fence? I watched my dog wedge himself between a small tree and the fence and work his way over. Removed the tree......problem solved.

Mine literally climbed the fence, like a human would. And I had to pretend to leave and climb up on the roof to catch her.

Yes, he walks up to the fence and climbs it...lol Thats it really. Not a certain spot or anything. Just where ever he feels like it at that time. I actually just picked up electric fence stuff today at ACE for 60 bucks.

my huskey mic was great at getting out untill we added an elct fence. we had the holders you hang barbed wire on at a angle but angled inside the yard.
and we used a neon light ballist as a real HELLO kinda zap. worked great! even got my brothers attention a time or two :)
Fred hasn't got out once since we installed the fence. he tested the fence twice. That was enough for him. I havent even had the fence plugged in the last two days either.
