Well, after 11 years the battery that came with my SV finally does not have the amps left to cold crank the bike. Had to bump start yesterday to go on a nice ride. After the bike is hot, the batt can spin it over enough to get going, no problem.
SUGGESTIONS! That is what I need. What is the preferred battery?

I bought a replacement battery for my R1 about 8 months ago. Yamaha factory puts YUASA batteries in their bikes.
I decided to try a lower cost brand (WestCo) with identical specs to see how it compared.
I have been disappointed so far.... but I admit that I haven't checked the starter to see if that might be the cause of my problems. I keep my bike (R1) outside. The battery doesn't hold enough of a charge when the weather gets chilly to start the bike. At first it was just sub-freezing weather... now it seems to be anything below ~37ºF.
I've never had any problems in warm weather.
I am going to check my starter for corrosion and then order a Yuasa as a replacement.

^ You need a Battery Tender if you keep your bike outside in the Winter...

My understanding is that there are only like 3 manufacturers, so all the nonames are nicer batteries rebadged, usually. Many people on svrider and the gstwins forums have recommended the wal mart batteries. You can order a stock yuasa from motorcyclebatteriesusa (I believe that's the site) for not a whole lot more though. The upside to a wal mart battery is you have the option to get a sealed one (go check the '99-'02 SV-tech forum at svrider.com to find out if there's a sealed one for your bike), and if you don't go sealed, at least you can get your battery filled and charged instead of having to order acid and fill/charge the battery yourself.

No I don't (I shouldn't, anyways). I ride my bike all year and this is the first year I have ever had issues.

If a new battery isn't fully charged before it is installed, it may not perform as well as the original. Are the terminals clean and tight? Check the other end of the ground wire. Corrosion can play some mean tricks.

Getting a "motocross" brand battery (yuasa) from www.tristatebattery.com. 65 bucks shipped for the same battery that costs ~$100 everywhere else.
It is the same battery as stock, with 175 cold cranking amps. Lots of yummy juice to start the bike.

In regards to fully charging before installation.... The battery I ordered ships with dry with acid in a bottle. Is it ok to put the acid in, put it on the bike and use the battery tender for 24 hours to get it juiced up?

Thats funny, my 2001 FZ1's battery just died as well....the original! I just ordered one from CycleNation in Canton, $75.

Yup, that should do it.

One thing I remember from mine, don't they say to do the charging outside the bike, on the off chance something goes wrong and battery acid bubbles everywhere?
