First Amendment be damned . . . If Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn had his way, any journalist who called Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez a dictator would quickly find himself behind bars.

Penn, appearing on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday, defended Chavez during a segment in which he detailed his work with the JP Haitian Relief Organization, which he co-founded.

"Every day, this elected leader is called a dictator here, and we just accept it, and accept it" said Penn, winner of two Best Actor Academy Awards. "And this is mainstream media, who should -- truly, there should be a bar by which one goes to prison for these kinds of lies."

well he is not a dictator that much is true, he was elected and he's been re-elected

At first, I was gonna say that the sooner Sean Penn dies a slow, painful death from penis cancer the better but then I saw that the story is from Fox
News. IT's obviously been distorted by the conservative mouthpieces since I didn't see the story mentioned on MSNBC.

Seriously though, the sooner Sean Penn dies a slow, painful death from penis cancer the better.

Another reason why I despise Hollywood actors and actresses that can't shut their damn mouths. What a waste of sperm.

I don't believe a word Jimmy Carter says.

Edit: And all of the Venezuelans I know (which is more than a handful) hate him, even those that are Barry nuthuggers.

well he is not a dictator that much is true, he was elected and he's been re-elected

I have a Venezuelan friend who told me about this.

Her uncle or cousin (can't remember) lost a testicle due to electrocution torture for being a "dissedent"

Many family members have lost jobs due to their views of Chavez.

This is how it works in Venezuela:

If you HAVE a federal job and vote against Chavez... You lose your job AND any benefits.

If you WANT a federal job and have voted against Chavez...You won't get the job.

If you work for a company that has government contracts and you vote against Chavez, you will be fired, because otherwise the company will LOSE the government contracts.

If you want a job at a company that has government contracts and you have voted against Chavez, you won't get the job.

Now, in a country were nearly EVERYTHING has been nationalized, so every form of employment touches the government in some form or fashion.... Who do you think is going to vote against Chavez?

You really are not aware of what is going on down there.

They pretty much ALL hate him, but the government has the guns, jobs, food, electricity, healthcare, housing.....

Oh, yeah, Housing in Venezuela.

If you have a house that the Chavez government deems as "too big", the government will FORCE YOU to tak in "poor people" to live in your "unused" rooms.

If you have "unused" land, the Chavez government will FORCE YOU to give up that land for the "good of the people"

The only real supporters of that Fascist DICTATOR Communist pig are the small number of people that get everything for free at the detriment of most of the rest of the country.

Gee, sound familiar?

The dirt poor around the world are ALWAYS the supporters of the Communist/Socialist/Marxist B.S., because it plays into all their dreams, wishes and envy. Class warfare, etc. They get the welfare and free goodies for BEING POOR.

What the dirt poor don't understand, especially since Chavez controls the media and education and travel systems, is that they are ALWAYS going to be poor, so Chavez can always count on their support. He will ALWAYS tell the poor that he is working on making them rich by taking the rich people's stuff and giving it to them. Of course this will make the entire country destitute as wealth will only get stolen. And it will also dramatically increase the number of "dirt poor" that can only survive by being wards of the STATE....since there is no place to get work anymore.... The Communist/Socialist/Marxist system is a great system as it starts by using the poor as support..... then makes more people poor, thus gathering more support, until...... Everyone is dirt poor, discontent and wants something different.

Of course, by that point, by utilizing class warfare to justify his actions, the dictator has taken control of every company and system in the country, eliminating the chance of any real competition.

Look at Chavez's closest ally, Cuba. After 51 years of "revolution", the Cubans are still poor and there are no rich people.....well, except for the leadership and cronies.

I don't disagree with you at all, my only point was the poor still love and vote for the guy, the more he comes down on the rich the more they like him

Because he takes care of them. That's nice and all, but if you do it by confiscating the property of private citizens and giving it to the poor . . . wait, that sounds awfully familiar.

That is the sad part for the Venezuelans, if they don't get rid of this turd in the next few years, he will have absolute control and remain in power for life.... and that will be enough time to have a couple generations of people born into the despicable system and think it normal. After that it will probably be a century before the system collapses and their country can re-emerge from a sadly self-imposed Dark Age.
