I have a portable HD with all my music on it. I would like to bring it to work and play it through my work computer. Some of my files are in mp4 format and some are in mp3 format. The mp3 format files run just fine through windows media player. However, the mp4 files do not.
Is it possible to have itunes on my portable HD and run it from there? I am unable to install software on the work computer so i cannot install itunes directly.

Nope. Usually software has to be installed to run, and that means it makes changes to the system registry on Windows. Won't run otherwise...
Regardless, the mp4 files should work if you have a player installed that recognized mp4 formats (and assuming they aren't DRM locked.)
Do you have VLC player opn the computer? Try playing them through that...

Please dont convert a lossy format to a diff lossy format. You may as well delete the music at that point

Not everyone is an audiophile nerd. Some people just want to hear their music. When I ride, for example.. I don't have custom molded earphones, so I can't hear enough of a difference to care. I just want some tunes, and I assume that they won't be max quality.

Convert lossy to lossy and you'll be lucky to hear any music at all

he's using a work computer, most likely $10 speakers or headphones made in china. the loss will not be noticeable. i do file conversions all the time, just increase the sample rate on commercial apps and use the equalizer to suit your ears. i don't recommend introducing/running apps attached to work computers.
