I have a 2001 ZRX1200R that I bought new and now have 40,000 plus miles on it. I have always change the oil every 1200-1500 miles and have done regular valve adjustments. The only mods I have on the bike is a D&D slip on and individual K&N Filters which of course required removal of the air box. This past weekend I tired starting the bike after 4-5 months sitting in the carport uncover just like the last 9 years. The bike turned over with no problems but would not start, so I figured that I'd check the plugs and replace the fuel. I pulled the #1 plug first and it was coated in oil as if it had just been dipped in oil but just the bottom half of the plug, not the ceramic portion. I pulled the #4 also as these two are the easiest to get to right away with out removing the coolant tubes and thermostat housing. #4 was the same, coated in oil!! I checked the sight glass and noticed that the oil level was below the lower sight line but was slowly coming back up. I know that it was not over filled with oil as I'm not a newbie by any means when it comes to bikes but this is the first time I've come as cross this problem. The last time I rode the bike it ran perfect, no mechanical noise, no smoke, no nothing. I've got a friend that works a bike shop who's head mechanic just told me to replace the plugs and it should be fine and that it was just caused be condensation due to the dramic temperature changes we've been having. Anyone have any other ideas or come across this problem and is the mechanic right about his theroy?

Condensation won't cause oil in the cylinders. Is oil actually dripping off the plugs or are they black and wet? If they're black and wet, they may just be gas fouled. Sounds like you need a thorough carb cleaning. The wonderful EPA freindly E10 fuel we're getting now sucks and contributes to carb issues after sitting for a few months.

They are not gas fouled, this actual oil dripping off the plugs as if the cylinders just got filled up with oil as I was turning over the engine several times. As said before, bike was in great condition before sitting for the last 4 months.

Did you fog the cylinders before winter and forget about it? I dont see your rings being shot from sitting, so I'm going to bet that you're seeing bad fuel as well and mistaking it for oil.

Thats why I always start mine and let it get up to temp once a week in the winter.

Okay, remove the plugs, turn it over for about 30 seconds with no plugs in it to clear the cylinders. Install new plugs and see what happens.
