I bought a Sig 556 a couple of months ago because I was looking for an AR style rifle with a gas piston design. Put a Nikon M223 3X12X42 on it and love this gun! Anyone else have any input on the Sig?

sig also makes a new AR-15 gas block, sig 516

the 556 is built more reliable than the 516. i'm not sure why they even came out with a 516.

I have a Sig 556 "Commando" in OD green that I purchased new in 2008

Pros
Kept the Sig 550 piston system
STANAG compatible magazines
Combines reliability of an AK with accuracy of an M4
2 stage trigger

Cons
Front heavy
Fit and finish subpar, especially in later models. Look for bolt carrier wear against your upper receiver
Built in Back up Iron Sights are a joke
not ergonomic like a M16/M4

I really like that this platform designed from the ground up to be a piston gun. If youre using it to be a bench gun, it is fantastic. If you intend on driving it hard, then I think there are better options.

I don't have experience with this weapon exactly, but have heard nothing but good things about Sig. Personally, I have the LMT Defender 2000, with tons of my own toys added to it.

what upper do you have for your LMT? I've got a MRP CQB upper and it's been giving me problems with short stroking. I"m going back to the range over the weekend hopefully with a different lower (C3 billet lower with DD LPK, Magpul ACS stock) and also the 6.8 barrel/bcg to try out and see if I can narrow down where the issue is...

Its more reliable because its a piston system and not gas impingement, thats like saying why buy an AR instead of an AK. In this case, the sig556 won't fit a number of custom AR parts, so why not sell another rifle that does as well? Some people just like the AR pattern.

This one is identical to mine except for my toys.

I added a thumb pad LED SWAT light, thumb pad green laser for CQ, and a 4-12 variable magnification illuminated reticule scope for distance. I also have a collapsible bipod that I keep in my gear bag, and is quick detach in the event that I need some bracing.

MagPull 30 rounders are the only way to go, too.

the sig 516 is also gas piston. the 556 has proven it's field duty well. the OP was looking for an AR style rifle and made a great choice with the 556 over the newer dime a dozen 516. there are different quality AR-15's out there, i prefer the less common black rifle.

The AR platform is the way to go for lighter weight performance. I think this 556 will shoot pretty much any brand ammo or weight bullet, it likes 75 gr ammo with a 1in7 twist for accuracy.
