HIGHEST ELEVATIONS OF STATE ROUTE 348/RICHARD RUSSELL SCENIC PARKWAY
White and Union Counties
GAINESVILLE — The Georgia Department of Transportation announces seven miles of SR 348 is now closed to traffic due to pavement damage.
“At Hog Pen Gap this year’s wet, cold winter has damaged the asphalt to the extent that traffic cannot use the roadway at all. Because of this damage, Georgia DOT closed part of Richard Russell Scenic Parkway this morning. Georgia DOT Engineers will assess the damage and develop a repair plan. There is currently not a schedule for repair. Asphalt is temperature sensitive so all repairs must wait until after the season’s final freeze and temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees at Hog Pen Gap. This section of State Route 348 will be closed until further notice,” explained DOT Interim District Engineer, Todd McDuffie.
SR 348 will be open to traffic to provide access to the trailhead at Raven Cliff’s on the White County side of the state route. SR 348 in Union County will remain open to traffic from mile post 3.5 to State Route 180.
Hog Pen Gap’s elevation is 3,800 feet. It rates among one of Georgia ’s highest roadway elevations.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes.
