AVG free, along with Comodo Personal Firewall (freeware, lifetime registartion, lifetime updates, same as AVG). Comodo is a little annoying at first, as it learns your routine; Once it's set up, it's not intrusive at all, and it helps you decide what to do with alerts.

I agree on the AVG free, I've run it about 3 years or so, no problems.

Webroot Antivirus with Spysweeper. I've had minimal problems with it for four or 5 years. It's not free, but it's pretty cheap. I discovered it was worth a few bucks to dodge the headaches. There are a bunch of free programs out there. Avast, as mentioned, is a good one. Sophos has some free trials. They are top notch.
I also run the spyware programs like Malwarebytes, Ad-aware, Super AntiSpyware, Spybot Search & Destroy. You can also download HiJackThis. There are forums you can paste your scan on and have it diagnosed. Or you can read up on it and figure out which programs need to be removed. Hope this helps.

i also don't use antivirus software. what i have been using is vmware for web browsing. works great. there are also free virtual pc software (sun makes a good one - virtual box).
as long as your pc has enough memory and cpu power, virtual pc is the way to go...
any infection is easy to fix, just reset to a previous vpc snapshot.

Love Avast. Switched from AVG about 6 months ago, after 4 or 5 years, and haven't looked back.

That works until you actually use the web for something other than looking at it. I download files from banks. There's probably other things. To get those files to the right place, you have to let Vbox have access to the file system on your "real" system. Seems like that would undo the protection that browsing from a Vbox provides. Viruses often come embedded in videos and music files etc also, things you might want to download and save. If you save them on a virtual disk and then reset it, their gone. If you save them on your "real" disk and then open them there, you're infected.
I could be wrong, but I've used Vbox for work and that's the way I understand what it does. I suppose you could scan any files you download before moving them to your real disk, but good antivirus software scans downloads on the fly anyway.

My antivirus is a MAC :O
as mac gains market share I assure you your environment will be pummeled with viruses. Unlike the linus/unix crowd, majority of mac users pride themselves on being technologically inept. I love mac BUT majority of their base are technophobes that bought into the hype that artist and the creative types should use macs because "they just work".
P.S. All the macs i support (roughly 40) have mcafee running on them *wink*

Never seen a MAC with any AV software...As for virus infecting MACs as they gain market share....don't hold your breath. I realize that Apl is not the most popular company on the block, but they don't seem to piss off people like m$ does and they are definitely not as greedy.
I've been m$ free for 8 years and I'm loving it....
So I am sort of a MAC user, as I have two MACs, but my main OS in Linux on a netbook.

My antivirus is a MAC :O
And as mac's are gaining more popularity and businesses are starting to use them, the hackers will inevitably start aiming more attention that way & many mac users will start screaming that the sky is falling once the first virus hits

MACs have been in business for many, many years. Just peak in any recording studio ( you'll find a MAC with Pro Tools ) or graphics shop.
m$ creates it's own enemies....
