View Full Version : Turn signal won't stay on?

The previous owner of my bike installed aftermarket flush mounts (I have no idea what brand) as well as an integrated tail light / turn signal (the LED kind where half the tail light flashes yellow when it's turned on).

The problem is that the right turn signal usually doesn't stay on. It will blink 2 or 3 times, then turn off. Also, the faster I'm going, the less likely it is that it will stay on. For example, if I'm going 15mph, there's a pretty good chance it will stay on. If I'm going 60mph, it almost definitely won't. But, there doesn't seem to be a specific speed where it stops working.

I'm having a hard time figuring if it's even happening with the left blinker. I thought it was, but I've been paying attention lately and it seems to be working fine...

Any ideas?

Maybe the contacts in the switch are dirty and the vibration is making it lose contact.

Is it a thermal flasher relay? If so, you need to upgrade to an electrical one or add resistors to your LED wiring.

I have no idea... I heard about that though. But, from what I've reader if it's a problem with the flasher relay it will just stay on. Also, the left one works.

Basically, it will blink like normal 2-3 times, then turn off.

It does seem to be related to speed, so you may be right Seca, could be a loose wire. I'll be taking the fairings off these week to test fit the new fairings, so I'll check that then.

Ehh, it was just a WAG. Electrical gremlins are hard to pinpoint without proper troubleshooting and isolation.

If you start checking and cleaning connections, get some dielectric grease to apply to them as you go. It will A) help you identify connections you've checked and B) keep them clean and free of water.

Make sure to check all your ground points as well.

Yep, will do!

This is just one of a handful of problems I've found on this bike caused by the ignorance of the previous owner(s).

I took a quick look, and the wiring looks sloppy. When I get the fairings off I'll rewire everything and properly solder and heat shrink everything.
