View Full Version : Accident on Blood Mountian tonight (Tuesday 3/8)

I came up on a road block about 6PM tonight just north of the esses past the hard right. It looks like a northbound blue Yamaha race replica (don't know which model, but it had dual performance exhausts) went straight when the road curved left and impacted one of the rock walls head on. There was an ambulance on sight with lights going and paramedics standing around. They headed south shortly after I got there with no siren. That could be very bad or very good. They were maneuvering the flatbed to tether up the bike when I was let by.

Anybody heard anything else? Are we missing anyone?

Tom

As far as I know, the R1 is the only Yamaha bike with dual exhaust cans on it

The rider that went down was Jordan Mason, he is a poster on here occasionally.

So far the only thing that I know is an L1 spinal fracture and he is still in the hospital (had at least 1 surgery that I know about).

can't remember his username on here off the top of my head.

Latest update per facebook was 7 hours ago.

Jordan was taken to surgery a little before 2 a.m. Dr. said it may be 4 p.m. before he's out of surgery! His femur is fractured too, and one of the ankles is real bad, Dr. said he would try his best to fix it. He is very broken, but knows what's going on. Thank you all for your prayers!

it's weird that he went down there. He's a very good rider, knows that road like the back of his hand. Guess he was pushing a little too hard or maybe hit some debris on the road.

Him on his old R1

Still debris on Blood. U can't see it while riding, but looking at my cam vids...u can see it flying off the rear tire steadily in some turns.

I came up on this unfortunate accident minutes after it happened. A crumpled blue late model R1 was lying on the side of the road, its rider askew the double yellow. The rider was moving his arms a bit, but was obviously in agony and his leg was bent in the wrong direction. Fortunately he was being comforted by a couple of men who were first to the scene and had called for help. After a seeming eternity (15-20 mins) the ambulance and small squadron of LEO's arrive and the rider was lifted onto a gurney and into the ambulance and a few miles down the road into a helicopter.

Looks like he skidded a minimum of 250 feet before running off the road and into the rocky embankment. A visibly shaken lady said he had just passed her before running off the road. While waiting in the road I spoke with several locals who commented on the frequency of these occurrences and how they'd grown desensitized and indifferent to the plight of sport bike riders who treat their local roads as amusement parks. I nodded guiltily in agreement.

Pics taken after Jordan was put into the ambulance:

Thanks Gibby.

I got a update last night around 11:00 pm.

well the last i herd today they just pretty much let him rest. He is on a ventilator but they are trying to Ween him off of it, but they did put in a feeding tube tonight due to him being so sedated. all of this is normal for this kind of injury according to his aunt. so just be praying he has a speedy recovery.

He's really banged up. Looks like he just flat out hit the rock wall based on those markings.

Isn't this the 2nd accident thats happened up there already this year? Now I see why the track is always said to be the best place to go.

I just really think that u can only learn / push so much on the street before taking it to the track. Anything beyond 65-75% on the street is insane to me. Those locals are right, ppl need to take it to a motorsports park, or take it down a notch.

Gibby
03-11-2011, 12:08 PM
I have to admit to riding fairly briskly when the road gets twisty, but always well within my limits. I strongly urge everyone to do a few trackdays as it not only allows for safely testing your and the bike's limits, it also is the best way to learn how to ride a sportbike properly.

I never get close to putting a knee down on the street and after seeing this accident, and learning that Jordan was a skilled rider, I will probably slow it down a bit. I could add some more graphic detail of what I saw and heard, but out of respect will not publicly disclose.

I agree with you guys, I think seeing a dude I know nearly lose his life I will be toning it down a lot. I'll admit I like to move up there and have had a few close calls but I usually just brush it off and act like nothing happened.

Just sucks this has to happen, but it's the way it is I guess.

I've witness some crazy shit at Blood Mountain and honestly I love those road's but they do scare me tho esp the S curves. last Sept I was riding with Drew (speedracer)and a guy from our group went off the side of the road in a very steep downgrade. He is lucky to be alive he went straight into a line and down went the Yamaha R6. Most of the bike took the impact on the fall down with the rider. The frame was broken in half and the rider was lucky to be alive.

jeff had video of the red r6 the went off. thats the same spot my daytona landed. bout 40 feet down the side of the mountain and smacked into a rock. my mountain days are very very limited, not just because of that, but a number of factors as well. looking forward to riding a ton on the track.

that's why i stopped doing whoolies in 05. And try to ride without people who have to show off on public roads.... I 've many times pondered of getting off the streets and keep it fully track. But My passion was born on the streets and I can never stop. Heck i even rented a wing so i can feel what middle age ridding feels like. But not only watching out for mountains is the least of the obstacles, methed out teenagers and senors worry me more....

This is too bad. I like seeing people drag knees, but with the speed on a mountain road, you never know what might pop up. 2 square inches of gravel can kill you.

I wrecked mine about 4 turns down from the hostile on blood mountain, wasn't knee dragging, but probably about 55 - 65 mph when the front tire slid out. Looked back over the road and found probably a one inch lug nut from a dumptruck there. Not sure that I hit it, but it's a strong possibility. Luckily I walked away from a totalled bike. Thank you gear!

I saw the area that he crashed at it's marked in Orange paint on the curve near the side of the mountain rock (near Blood). Was out there this tue riding and I myself hit something in the road (RR) that caused my rear tire to slid. I'm avoiding the area for a little wile now tho.

Why would they cut it out? Is that normal?

thats the only logical explanation i had....i didnt shut it off mid run...(or else i wouldnt have tried to fix it) and it had plenty of memory...so GSP must have cut it out abour 45 seconds before the accident.

Hey Everyone....just an update on my condition.:yamaha:

I am currently goin to outpatient therapy at union general. everything is goin great! been on crutches for awhile now and they are having me walkin with a cane there, tomorrow most likely will be walkin without one...still not walkin "good" yet...still a bit shakey...but in time will come back. I have been gettin out and hangin out with my friends and goin to the movies. So i gues you can say i am about back to normal...hopefully on the 28th i will be cleared to take this brick (big black boot) off my right leg...that way i can wear a normal shoe and get back to driving....AND for those wondering...I am plannin to get back on 2....I miss it so much!!!! All of these beautiful days are killing me! but i plan in the meantime to go chill up on blood mtn and snag a few photos haha...i guess thats the next best thing next to riding. well again thanks for all of the support! Keep the rubber side down!:up:
