pretty much just google it and look around ar15.com for good "how to" build your AR. that's what I did on my lower. I have a factory LMT but built up a lower receiver from a C3 billet enhanced lower receiver and a Daniel Defense lower parts kit. I added a Magpul ACS stock, LMT buffer tube/spring, etc. and have a nice lower.
from what I've read these days it's pretty easy to just buy the upper as it's pretty close to the cost to build one depending upon what you want to do with it (i.e. quality of barrel, BCG, etc). I know I've seen some sales a few months ago with nice uppers for $350-400. Keep an eye on Midway and see what they have on sale or locally I've seen some nice prices on Daniel Defense uppers (really nice quality gear). if you plan to sell it in the future, a lot of people want a factory built gun or something built with quality parts (no frankenguns). :) Also depends upon what caliber you are going to build. I have 5.56 and 6.8 SPC. If you want a 6.8 look on the 6.8 forums for good deals on lightly used uppers. there are some nice ones for cheap on there pretty often. expensive to shoot unless you reload but on hogs it's great!
good luck with it, it's fun to build your own!

Its fun, but you can get carried away with things. There are alot of reputable makers out there, I would spend the money on a good lower and the upper's are all about the same. Depending on what type of group you are wanting to shoot, stick with 1:9twist for basic accuracy to 300m's. AR-15 is a good place to start, but check out Cheaperthandirt.com, you can find some pretty good deals there also.

Before our current President was elected, I jumped on the bandwagon and bought 5 unfinished lowers on gunbroker. Consecutive serial numbers from Rock River. I had a hard time finding lower parts kits at the time and they were outrageously priced. But it is easy as pie to put together. I built a 6.8 spc for my brother. One of my buddies bought one and he went in with me to give one to my Muay Thai instructor who had just traveled all over the country to corner both of us in some fights. I built a 5.7 sbr, and another lower that I PLANNED to slap a 300 whisper on. The 300 whisper got derailed, so I have a lower with nothing on it.
As was mentioned above, ar15.com will be invaluable to you, assuming you can wade through all the brand loyalty bull shYte, and chest banging. It truly has more info than you can possibly use. It is an excellent site.
I have a couple DPMS uppers, and I love them. I think most brands are pretty similar, so find whatever you like at the right price point for you. Then search on ar15 about that particular item and see what you think.

Are you truly building the gun or just putting a complete lower and complete upper together then adding some modifications?
If building, there are plenty of videos showing how to do it. It is pretty simply, but easy to screw up and put dummy marks on a lower or upper.
If just throwing complete stuff together, look for good deals. They are out there.
For a hunting/plinking gun, keep it simple. Don't spend a ton on the parts then throw a cheap NC Star scope on it, but also don't expect a bargin bin parts gun to shoot amazing groups just cause you have a US Optics scope on it.
You can spend anywhere from $5-600 up to several grand.
Moorespeedr - Look at the 300 Blackout that is coming out. AAC designed it and Remington is going to produce it.

DPMS should be able to supply you with everything you need. They did me...

As an aside, if you don't have plans for the weekend of Apr 8, 9, 10, I recommend this place:
http://www.knobcreekgunsales.com/
For me, this has been a bi-annual event for about the last 15 years. The Knob Creek Range is your basic rifle, pistol, trap, skeet, paint-ball kinda place ...except for two weekends per year, when they open it up to fully automatic weapons and it becomes the largest military gun show in the country. QUITE the spectacle.
Needless to say, DPMS will have a booth there.
