View Full Version : questions on 09 fz6r -bike alignment?

So during my frist ride on the FZ6R yesterday I noticed a few things that are different from my old ninja 250.

For starters there was a crazy vibration under my butt (the seat) the entire time. Similar to the vibration I had in my hands on the 250, now my freaking butt is vibrating...whats that about?

second issue is the steering. Its feels like a car does when it needs an alignment and it pulls to one side. I swear it felt like I was sideways and when I would turn or go around a corner the bike would resisit. Ive read a +1 front sprocket would help, any idea on that?

when down shifting to 1st, it felt like my shifter was going to fall off, like my foot was going to get caught in something...I looked at the chain, and its dry as a bone, so I know it needs oil.

Lastly, I have a warranty, but where do I take it for repair?

Did you check your tire pressure?

Was the bike ever down? The alignment issue could be frame or fork damage.

If you take your hands of the bars, does the bike try to dive down to one side or the other?

Take it to MarMo or a shop you trust and have someone give it a thorough look over.

It could be you're just not use to the new bike or it could have some serious issues.

The guys at L'ville Honda Yamaha are great with the warranty. I needed a new ignition tumbler in my Fizzer, also from Adi, and they took care of the whole thing.

I think the guy behind the counter was also named Mike, but I could be mistaken. They're at 316 and Collins Hill, shouldn't be too hard for you to find.

no i didnt check my tire pressure. I have to get my hands on a manual for the bike, as it didnt come with one so I dont knw what my pressure should be yet.

On the front end issue, check pressure as was said, but also look at the wear on the front tire. If you bought the bike used, and the tire has some mileage on it, I've seen a lot of tire that were "cupped" that causes exactly what your describing.

On the shifts issue, you said the chain was dry, lube and adjust so that the chain when sitting still looks like its smiling at you slightly. Also, the Yamaha's have always had a loose or clunky feel to them compared to other manufacturers, so it may just be that's what your feeling.

On the seat vibration, just rotate your hips forward and enjoy. ;)

Look on the swingarm by the rear wheel. Some bikes will have a label with the recommended pressures.

Look on the swingarm for a sticker. I believe the sticker that has the VIN on it on the frame of the bike has recommend pressure settings as well.

Good point. When I first got my VFR a couple years ago the front cupped really bad and it would fight me in turns.

Look in the "Specifications" section

33 front 36 rear up to 198lbs
or
36 front 42 rear for 198lbs+

"cupped"? explain a little more please? I like the tire is warped from sitting so long?

think i saw some writing on the sticker, I will check it later

this thing was giving me hell. I felt at one point like if I needed to turn left, the bike wouldnt make it.

PJ, look at the tread on the tire, place the palm of your hand across it and run your hand in both directions. It should feel smooth going both ways, no high spots at the grooves of the tread. Cupped means just like it sounds, the tire will have a cupped look/feel to it at either the leading or trailing edge of the tread. Just like on car tires, improperly inflated bike tires will develop an odd wear pattern to them, only difference with a car is you wont feel it as much as you will with a bike.

Rub your hand over your front tire. If the profile doesn't feel like an oval, it could be the front tire

edit: ^^^ or what he said :handclap:

Didn't that bike come with the Bridgestone BT-021 as the oem tire. I just looked back at the for sale thread and 4800 miles is a little to soon for one of those to crap out unless completely neglected.

Todd

Ringo, if the tire was kept inflated properly, it could very well do that.

Ringo®

I'm sure its possible. I've run those before and got obscene mileage out of the front. Either way, feel around on the front like Todd said.

the tire feels more flat than oval to me. I rolled it backwards a few times so i could get a feel around the entire tire and it feels more flat than oval on the treads. So maybe i need tires on the bike. it was sitting in Adi's garage for a good bit i think at least 3 months or so....can anyone recommend a good set of tires? I had perili sport demons on my two fiddy and loved them....

Yep, 79xx miles is alot of miles on a set of sportbike tires.

OverTwoCustoms has a good deal on the Pirelli's, 2 members here just purchased a set from them in the last couple of weeks. I think Cycle Gear has a good deal on the new Q2's from Dunlop as well.

Todd

If you decide to take it to OTC for the tires, let Lorne give the bike a good once over, looking at the head bearings and fork alignment just to make sure everything is honkee dor'ee.

No doubt! I'm taking it to otc Wednesday anyway I plan on having Lorne check it out so I will knw if it needs to go to Yamaha for svc.
