Granted I would probably pay my dues on time but the fact that she cant even get to her own house without getting "permission" from the guard......

A quick call to my Attorney to look over my HOA agreement I signed back when I bought the house inside the community would happen if they didn't let me in.

WOW! I can't say that I really fault the HOA though. She should have read the contract/terms thoroughly before signing it, and while I'm sure when her husband was working she thought to herself "Oh that will never be us." now it is and you have to live with the decision you made.
I've heard storys of HOA fees be crazy high. Ours is reasonable at $600 a year, not bad since we have access to the pool and tennis court which is all there really is.

My friend's high-rise in Buckhead pays $633 a MONTH!!!!
I don't mind HOA's, but that is highway robbery. Granted, it's in a nice community, but still.

Some neighboorhood HOA are really expensice and strict.. You have to figure out what all is included and make sure you get your money worth and can live by the rules before moving into the community. I dont have to worry about lawncare since the HOA takes care of that. THey take care of the water bill, make sure all the houses are termite protected, and I can use the pool. My place isnt gated which is nice.

I would have told them to F themselves in crayon on the letter they sent and mailed it back to whoever.
That's silly to pay a lot of money to live somewhere so someone can tell u how to live when your paying for the damn house and they aren't helping. If they payed some of the mortgage then I might consider their input.

My HOA has bawked at me numerous times for leaving my trailer in my driveway.. ok I can kinda understand that.. and they yell at me during the middle of winter that I need to pressure wash my home.. apparently noone on the board took basic chemistry regarding the freezing point of water :)
What gets me, is that there are several houses in my neighborhood that have lawns/homes in a lot worse shape than mine, for a lot longer than mine, and yet im the one (paying dues on time) that gets yelled at.

That seems like a very effective way to get people to pay their fees. The woman lives in a gated community, and she expects there to be no consequences if she doesn't pay her monthly fees? It's not like they're locking her out.

True. Its not even like she can't have visitors, she just has to go get them.

My former neighborhood in Birmingham had a HOA. I got on the board as soon as I moved into my house, it wasn't hard they had all of 4 people active. Anyway, I got on the board to insure there was a voice of reason and sanity. Our covenant has some outrageous rules, and they are not practical so I wanted to make sure I spoke up for the "sensible" man. We had this woman who would ride around the neighborhood just looking for stuff to complain about. I told her point blank at a meeting "We have to be sensible, if the direct neighbors, meaning the people who live on either side of the house in question aren't complaining then there isn't an issue."
Also I had to set her straight about people's back yards. She was complaining that one of our neighbors had an above ground pool (prohibited) in the backyard. These fine folks paid their dues on time, and had the pool in a fenced back yard, you couldn't even see the pool from the road if you drove by. I told her "Look they have a damn fence so what's the problem? If you have to go looking over someone's fence to find something they you have some serious issues."
Needless to say I am not a fan of HOA and when I buy my next house I damn sure won't be involved in any of that foolishness.

Just another "Victim" Why do all these people have such a hard time figuring out the simplest of things? Pay your bills, or deal with the consequences.

Well, with buildings, you have an electrical bill for the entire building, cost of security/front desk people. My monthly fee includes my water and gas. Some include tv/internet. I know a place in Buckhead where the monthly fee is over $1,000 for the smallest unit and goes up from there. That place has water, tv, gas, security, valet, and more included. So looking at high rises isnt really comparing apples to apples with a neighborhood HOA fee.
