Whats are the main benefit of 525 to 520?

I'm not doing track days but at 22k they need to be changed. I plan on keeping stock the 16/48 but of course replacing the sprockets. I have an R6s.

There's no advantage on the street. 525 chains generally last longer and you won't notice any difference on the street.

Really the only main advantage to running a 520 would be at races/track days where pretty much everyone has 520 chain parts in their tool boxes. Stay with the 525 and enjoy the longer chain and sprocket life.

the only advantage of the 520 is the lighter sprockets and chains (unsprung weight, blah blah blah). If youre riding the street, there is absolutely zero reason to change to the 520 set up, you'll just have to buy sprockets and chains more often. If youre due for new, then keep the stock chain pitch, and if youre interested in changing the actual gearing (one down in the front, ___ up in the rear, then you can still do that and stick with the stock pitch. The ricky racers on the skreet think its the "cool" thing to do going to the 520 set up, but all theyre doing is wasting money.

Mine is an 07 and has the same 532 you do. My factory set up has 22k miles on it so they kinda need replacing.

if youve got the 532, why did you mention 525??

There are some good deals on chain kits in OEM sizes. Regina makes kits for most poopular bikes that come with the stock gearing. I know there are a couple others also but the Regina is good stuff.

Man, if you got 22k out of the stock chain, by all means stick with the 532! Damn, that is some serious good chain life. I'm usually replacing mine at 15k, definitely by 18k.

Ive got 16k on my original chain so far. What are some signs it may be time to replace ? I ride in all weather everyday so it does have quite a few rust spots showing but I do clean/lube it constantly and havnt found any binds or kinks.

P.S. Sry for the :threadjack:

My Honda has a sticker on the swingarm, as you adjust the chain a marker slides and once it gets to the red section of the sticker its time to replace it. There might be other signs to look for as well but with you having an 08 check to see if you have a sticker.

Check chain slack at multiple positions of the rear wheel, so you will check the slack at one position, turn the rear wheel a bit, check it again, repeat until you make it across the entire length of the chain and all positions are equal. If you have a bad kink then one position it might feel really loose, and another position it might be really tight. If you ever have to make a considerable adjustment to your chain, it's probably a good idea to check it at a few different positions to make sure you have no kinks.

If your chain adjusters are really pushed back like Laz mentioned, that's another sign.

Sprockets wore out? Then you probably need a new chain along with the sprockets, since a stretched chain will wear new sprockets really fast.

Any time you do chain maintenance it's probably a good idea to look over your master link, be it riveted or clip-type, to make sure everything is good.

Rust on a chain is usually a bad sign.

to reduce some unsprung weight.

from what i read 525 was pretty good, maybe I'm wrong.

Pushing it probably, lol. That''s why I"m replacing it now. It's also been my first bike so a lot of learning and not hard riding for a good bit of the miles.

On the street, at a non professional riding level, there will never be a noticeable difference for you, except for increased chain/sprocket wear, with a correspondingly shorter life. As stated before, the main reason people swap from 525 to 520 is for the convenience of easily available parts at track days. If you're not a track rider, there's no reason to change from the stock chain size/pitch.

Todd
03-19-2010, 07:01 AM
again, if youre riding the street, you wont notice the difference. If you dont want to spend more money sooner, leave the chain PITCH stock. Change the gearing if you want to feel a little more "grunt" coming out of corners.

I switched to a 520 pretty quickly after I got my bike and the chain/sprockets probably only last me about 8-12k....granted I ride it pretty hard and
take a lot of trips (its my dd....actually its the only vehicle i got right now) so you can imagine how often im replacing them

You're not getting any benefit, and you're paying more to ride the same miles. Why?

cus all the racers do it, and it'll make the ricky racers faster in the mountains, and everyone on all the squid boards say its THE thing to do! Dont you know ANYthing??? :D

Before I really learned about motorcycles I too wondered why everyone was doing it, figured it had to be a like a must have mod since so many people have mods: 520 conversion. And then I learned it was only to save a little bit of weight? Nah forget that.

I actually almost went from a 525 to a 530 chain/sprockets for the possible benefit of getting a LONGER chain life.

^ Yea what he said! No actually I knew a guy that worked at the local dealer down here that would hook me up with 520 kits that included both sprockets and chain for cost, so besides
having to replace them more often it wasnt that big of a deal financially....Now that they just shut down it may be a different story. I can probably make it through this season without changing them out but come winter we'll see where I go with it. I was just throwing in my cents about how often I have to replace them to deter him from going 520

Changing up the gearing and pulling more tq on the street is well worth it to me but going 520 I could see why people are against it.

Personally I could tell the difference right away when I went to a 520 conversion on my Ninja 1298. I picked up .02 a lap on the LoOp. But hey, I guess I'm just faster than you guys.

Serious question though, if I am a fast rider and ride as hard on the street as I do on the track you think I might notice the difference?

Its not abnormal for stock 532 Yamaha chains to last 20k+ on an R6. I got almost 30,000 miles out of my first one.

In contrast, I had to replace my R1 stock chain before 15k miles because the previous owner liked wheelies (and burnouts, if the melted rubber on the hugger is any clue).
