Todd, not trying to be a dick... I know keeping something like GSB up and running can be a lot of work at times... But you also have to keep mind that you have users that you're providing a service to. We get pissed when the site just suddenly disappears with no warning, or when the board's DB gets wiped again with no warning.

I think a LOT of the frustration and such would go down if you would just post threads a couple days in advance of planning to do major upgrades or such to let us know it's coming so we can plan accordingly. To a LOT of us, this board is one of our major communication mechanisms with friends and when it's down with no warning, we always have to wonder: 1) is it coming back? 2) how can I get back in touch with everyone?

Mike, when this board goes down for maint (which is VERY rare), there is always an announcement made.

When it goes down for a software upgrade like this last time, it should have been so seamless, and done in the middle of the night, you would have never known it was down. Keep in mind, the so called "we dont know if its down for good or not" crap aint gonna fly. we've lost the DB 3 times in 10 years. Sorry. And if youre paying for this service, then yea, you'd have a right to bitch about it. We actually DO have folks that are paying for the service of advertising on GSB, and yanno what? Not a one of them has bitched about the glitches we have from time to time. Matter of fact, one of them emailed me when we went down with the DB fubar, and actually said he completely understood, with a DB the size of GSB, the PIA that it can be.

My post was a poke at you guys that bitch about a FREE site that had a glitch yesterday, and said you were done with this place..........yet here you are. :) Shit happens, and if the members here actually paid to be a part of this place, then i could see it, but all i see, and cant help but laugh out loud at, is the people who apparently have very little life outside of a messege board. If this place (or any other) consumes your life so much that if it happens to go down for an hour or two (which if you think about it, is the most its been down in the last 3 years, other than 3 weeks ago), then seriously dude, ya'll need some reality checks.

Oh, and to answer your questions:

1) its been here since 2000, so yea, it coming back is more likely a yes rather than a no

Free or not, it's a service.. regardless. It's one many here have come to enjoy and depend upon.

My main frustration with the loss of the database the couple of times it has happened, is as GMoney has said, we've built up a LOT of knowledge and information on this board over the years and when the DB gets lost, it's GONE. Adios... Kaput. All the threads, the pictures, the reviews, the knowledge... that's frustrating to many people. It's sad that all that built up knowledge gets lost to the ether with no hope of ever being restored.

I realize the people who run this site do it on their own time, and mostly with their own money... That is their choice - nobody forces them to do it. They do it because they WANT to do it, and yes, we all benefit from it. But the board also wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for the users coming and contributing, discussing, etc. (as you can see from what a ghost town some of the other boards are when this one is up.) It's a symbiotic relationship.

The frustration earlier in the week was because the site went down, and was pointing to a nothing page - the sort of thing that makes you wonder "Did Todd just say to hell with it after the problems with the DB the other week?" We had no way of knowing.

Frankly, I could live with or without GSB. I come here to chat and share info and exchange ideas, but I can do that elsewhere as well. I only come back as a distraction from time to time. If GSB went away tomorrow for good, sure I'd be sad that it's gone, but there are other places to go as well. It just would be difficult to re-establish some of the relationships that we've all built up through GSB. The community would fragment and go to different places and that would be unfortunate.

I get frustrated for the same reasons that Speedgeek does.

While free, it is a service and a source of lots of historical stuff, as well as a vehicle to communicate with friends and acquaintances, organize rides, etc... So when it keeps crashing, it causes a disruption of sorts, when you might not have a person's contact information, or cannot get that PM or whatever.

I am hoping that SSB will take off, but the sad reality is that everyone that went there and looked like they wanted to start anew, immediately brought their posting to a crawl there and ran back here when it came back online. And so the rest of us almost have to follow as well, if we wish to talk to these people.

I don't like having 3 forums with the same people and 90% of the same content... SSB/GSB/BSB...

I don't like having to read some threads here, and then the same people posted the exact same thread to the same people in the other two forums. it seems like a waste to have everything all scattered about. So, most of my posting will be over at SSB, until such time as it either takes off or it flops, whichever it is. But the other day, someone PM's me about some information on the Streetfighter, and so I have the email with the content, but no way to reply to the dude because I don't have his email address. It just seems that this forum goes down more often than any other forum that I am a member of, which is 20+...

No, but I think that after you lose the entire DB a few times, you change whatever broken process you have or build some redundancy into the mix, no? Shit happens, especially with PC's and data. But after the 2nd or 3rd time you lose everything, you don't think that the people that use the trashed data are gonna be like, WTF?

I keep everything backed up to a 1TB HD. Then I have a copy on an external HD. Then I have the really important stuff burned to DVD's and kept elsewhere so that if a fire hit and all my electronics went up, I would have a copy outside of my home.

I learned that lesson the hard way, after building a new PC and installing a new OS and hosing something and losing everything. I didn't have to get burned 2 or 3 times, I learned the first time and now I take precautions before upgrades. That's all Speedgeek was saying, I think.

Well, sometimes it is when you need to research or reference something. While the forum is hosted and serviced for free for us, without us all contributing, it would be a cyber ghost town. We all contribute to it and make it what it is, regardless of whether you find value in a particular post or even like that particular person.

So when we all contribute to it and help make it into what it is, and like to be able to use it as a knowledge base of sorts, yeah, it is disappointing when it crashes like that. That's what Speedgeek and others are saying, and I have to agree with it from that perspective.

we found a honey hole up off one of the roads we used to ride. i dont eat them but they are fun to catch.

there is dirt but the only place i know of gets old pretty quick plus since we are usually up there in the summer we go out on the lake or go to the river/creek.
