So why can only MSMA members claim? Seems like they keep an unfair advantage that way.

I think they're thinking, if you've got enough coin and backing to drop $100k Euro's into an engine and are that afraid of someone else seeing it, then you're probably being backed by a manufacturer and should really be an MSMA team. Like they said, there is already a BMW S1000RR powered Suter bike testing...if BMW was backing them and giving them R&D money to develop that motor, then they should be a MSMA team and not a CRT team.

Basically, they're now allowing what they kicked the WCM team out for years ago. WCM was found to be using Yamaha R1 engine parts to keep costs down, that was not allowed as MotoGP was a true prototype class.

It's much cheaper to take existing parts and modify them than it is to design, test and machine something from scratch. I think most people seem to acknowledge that current WSBK bikes are only down 10HP or so to true MotoGP bikes. So if you could design your own frame/supsension package, hot rod the motor a touch more and slap a good electronics package on it you'd be able to qualify for the big show. There were a few WSBK bikes that ran 1:30.8XX second laptimes in qualifying at Phillip Island this year, MotoGP's pole in 2010 was a 1:30.1 and in 2009 was a 1:30.3...so its plausible that you might be able to pull off a decent effort using a hopped up superbike motor.

I agree with Cliff...it's to keep the CRT boys honest.
