For years I have wanted to go up and do the Tail of the Dragon. Just never got around to it.

So this year I am joining 40+ other Ducati owners in May, for a weekend at a resort up near there, with day trips out to some fantastic roads, and one of them of course is the Dragon.

Which is now closed due to a rock slide, and it may be awhile before it is reopened.

Don't worry, that is not just a motorcycle mecca, but also a main shipping route for several truckers. The revenue THEY generate will mean the Dragon will be back open in no time.

TDOT closed 129 at the border this morning -- so your shit out of luck for the good part of 129. Still a lot of good roads up there though.
However, they said March 26th they should be open, so you should be just fine in May...

Tail of the Dragon (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tail-of-the-Dragon/189631058066?ref=nf) We have an unconfirmed report that TDOT will barricade the Dragon at the state line today (Friday), preventing access to the Dragon from the NC side. TDOT estimates land slide to be clear and open to traffic Saturday @ 4pm. We will keep you up to date. Good excuse to explore Moonshiner 28.

We will probably be forced to close the resort and not sure we will reopen this year. Lots of rumors flying around as to when they will get the mess cleaned up. I have heard 14 week to Aug. I will let you know more when I do.

Sounds like Tenn. is useing this as an excuse to not have to patrol the Dragon anymore.

And, it looks like the rest of the rock from the slide on 129 isn't too stable and they want to remove it all -- which is why it will take some time.
I doubt Tenn. will accept the offer for NC to patrol the roads -- because it doesn't bennefit Tenn. any when people use their roads and the tax revenue goes to NC...
