I know that the State had considered passing a law that would require an individual to pay sales tax on a used vehicle bought from another individual. Did this law pass or are individual to individual sales still exempt from sales tax? Just trying to factor in possibilities on a replacement vehicle.

You got to be kidding me this Goverment Suck's what is this another California (LOL). I don't buy my Car Parts in Georgia because I avoid the sales taxes here. there is too much of a dam mark up on Oem parts here too. I try to find other method's vs Paying into Ga fund's.

Scott, as far as I know, there is still no sales tax in GA on private party sales. Sarah and I both just bought used bikes and no sales tax.

If there is actually a law like that, thats just plain stupid. Who in the hell would wanna live in a state like that?

many states require this. last year, the GA legislature briefly considered enacting a law whereby tag renewals would only be 20 dollars annually as they were going to get rid of the ad valorum or "birthday" tax on your vehicle(s). in turn any time a vehicle was registered there would have been a 2-3% (cant remember) fee on the value of the vehicle capped at 3-4k dollars. the way the law was structured it hurt those buying less than ~$30k (or something- forgot the math) vehicle and it was much cheaper for someone buying an expensive car, proportionally speaking.

the bill died and was not enacted. as of now, its business as usual in GA. make sure the vehicle you are considering it titled in someone's personal capacity and not their business name and you wont pay any sales tax. its considered a private party sale. good luck with the search.

There was such law in GA back in the early 1990s but it was challanged then dropped shortly after it was created & all taxes paid were refunded.

Yeah, thats what I thought. When I bought the BMW last June it was $38 to get it tagged and titled. No ad valorums since it was after my birthday. :D

Mom should be the same with the Jeep.

In Georgia, its called a "casual sale".

Here's a link describing what is NOT a casual sale: http://rules.sos.state.ga.us/docs/560/12/1/07.pdf
