Got to take the Triumph out for its first track day on Sunday, so we headed over to Road Atlanta. This was also Donna's first track day, and we both had a blast.
She was a bit intimidated and didn't push the speed too much, but she learned the track and wants to do more and is already planning to do the Ed Bargy school and a track day at Barber.
The Triumph did well, but the only bikes I have had on Road A were literbikes, so on the straights it was a little frustrating as it felt noticeably slower than my other times at that track. My top speeds were about the same as the TL-R, but a good 25mph slower than the CBR1000rr. But overall the bike felt great, handled really well, was stable and it was pretty quick. Kept up with or ahead of pretty much any of the 600's, and most of the bikes that were passing me were the literbikes and 750's. The 675 is quick, but just doesn't have the muscle to keep up with the bigger bikes, especially with 255lbs of Squire and gear aboard. LOL
Anyway, had a great time, here are a couple vids. I used the GoPro HD that Donna bought for me, had the suction cup base on the tank, and I also had a helmet mount and a mount stuck to the tail for some reverse shots.
I edited them down, so the first vid is the forward view from the cockpit:

Here is a video of me following Donna:

I have a video uploading of Donna's daughter's boyfriend Neal following me, with the camera on the tail facing backwards, should have that up in about an hour. Also have a session with the helmet mount in full 1080P.

Great resolution with the camera. Sorry I don't come over and hang out with you guys some, but with the heat and riding I stayed fairly busy. Hope you come out and ride with us again!

Yeah, I think we are gonna try to do Barber with you guys in September if it doesn't conflict with the Women's Sportbike Rally up at Deal's Gap.
Good seeing you out there Dave. Glad you guys had a good time.

Interesting to see the speeds compared to my SXV550. I was seeing about 102 going into turn 6 and 115 on the back straight. What kinda times were you running? We run the chicane and the new turn 12 during race weekends so I dont know how good a comparrsion it is but I was just wondering. I have looked at a few 675's do they feel pretty narrow when compared to other 600's?

Yeah, I have not ridden the bike enough to get real comfortable in stepping up the pace in the turns. I only got it a month ago, and this was the first time on track with it.
It is narrow, feels smaller than Donna's Ninja. Power is great for a 600, but not quite up to the steam of an 848 or Gixxer 750. Top end is about the same as a ZX-6R or R6, but it has a lot more zip in the low end and mid-range. But the bigger bikes rip right past it on the straights. I don't know what my lap times were, I never use a lap timer. I could load the video into the video editing software and time a lap that way, using the finish line or some other marker as a point of reference.
Pulling the video into the editor and freezing frames, one lap looked like I did a 2:03
Yeah, not exactly AMA pace is it? LOL
I seem to remember bing in the low to mid 1:50's when I was on the CBR1000rr. Having the higher top speed and faster acceleration out of turns made a pretty big difference. The 675 just doesn't have that muscle, so unless I have a ton of corner speed my lap times aren't going to be very impressive. hehe

you are always going to be dissappointed when comparing a 675cc engine to a 1000.
looks like you had fun though.

Yeah, it was a ton of fun. Donna and Neal had a blast too. Donna wanted to go faster, but once she got on the track she was a bit intimidated and decided to just ride her own ride, stick with the instructors and take it easy. But she wants to do more and is already bugging me to look for a track day in August so that she can work on getting her confidence and speed up.
I just ordered a -1 front sprocket. That should help me on the straights with acceleration. Lowers my theoretical top speed a tad, but I don't think that most 600's have enough power to hit redline in 6th with stock gearing anyway, not without a bunch of work... So I will come out of turns a little quicker and have better drive, and in the end I don't think I will lose any top speed. I mean, if I had a really long straight I could lose a couple mph, but Road Atlanta seems to be the fastest track in the area, and I wasn't gonna hit redline in 6th there.

Yeah, but on the street the difference was less. But when you come out of turn 7 and pour on the power, that was where I really felt it. The TL-R wasn't much faster, but the CBR had a solid 40HP advantage and that made the back straight a hell of a lot quicker than the Daytona. When I was there on the Repsol, there was maybe 1 or 2 guys the entire day that could pull past me on the straights, and even then they barely pulled past. This weekend I got passed a lot.
I know, I need to work on my speed in the turns and all that, but no matter how fast I go in the turns, that is still a long straight and any literbike is gonna blow past me.
Huey, how much to turbo a Daytona? LOL

Well yeah, but it is hard when you are used to literbikes for years and then step back to a 600. 600's are fast, sure, but when you are accustomed to a 1000, everything else "feels" slow, you know?

No, it is just that this bike doesn't have enough stickers on it.

The SV didn't send me to the moon. It didn't waste any time putting me on the ground. The moon trip was Jennings like 5 years ago. Remember, you told me to ride your Duc almost immediately after.

when you look back...a few things happen... you inadvertently swerve to the side... which takes you off line... you slow down... you distract the other rider(s)... All of this can be bad on the track. It takes some trust but it works out in the end if you trust the other riders to pass safely. If I'm closing hard on you, I'm expecting you to do YOUR thing and I will adjust to get around you. It's my responsibility to pass safely. If you turn to look around, you've just changed several aspects of what I was expecting...and planning on, thus throwing everything out the window and possibly creating a situation. Sorry to preach but I see this a lot and it creates instances that sometimes work out, and sometimes don't. Especially in mixed company at trackdays where skill levels vary.
Case in point, you did this into 10a, a hot braking zone. You were towards the right of the track so if you look back, I'll guess you'd look over your left shoulder. I pass guys on both sides there but just say I was coming by on the outside (or right side) so as not to stuff you or spook you and expect you to hold your line, you would cut me off into the grass or get packed from behind as I'd be left with no where go and little time to react when you start wondering to the right while looking back.
sorry I'm using you as the culprit cause several folks do it out of habits learned on the street. Just try to focus on what's ahead and leave what's behind you for someone else to worry about. Maybe you have a fear of being hit from behind? If so, turning around and slowing up will increase the force of impact... just saying.
another reason not to look back...I was in a race at barber last year on the 600 and got passed coming out of the coaster. As we went through the chicane, he looked back.... just to see me as i was passing him back. Had he not done that, my pass would have been much more difficult cause he wouldn't have subconsciously let off while looking ahead. Thus you go faster NOT looking back.
Start wearing earplugs if you don't already. The noise of bikes coming up behind me was very distracting when i first got on track. It spooked me all the time and made me nervous. Plus the noise damages your ears! The ear plugs helped drown that out and let me concentrate more on the road/curves in front of me. Just some advice to think about...

I didn't look back at all in this video...like I said a few posts ago. I look back:

b.) red flag once everyone has slowed down.
I'm confused as to why you just went out on this little tangent tbh...

I still make rookie mistakes so I was skeered to enter the big leagues just yet... Just one newb spreading his experience to others....
Sorry ramm to go at you, wasn't meaning it that way... I saw a lot of this at the keith code day at barber so thought I would mention it in response to the above... I'm sure you're a standup guy that corners low...
As for Todd...well he might can standup, with a walker... :Poke: So R10's eh???

I was commenting on the camera bike being a hazzard by throwing out the anchor halfway down the straight. That is an asspack waiting to happen! Like throwin' your car in reverse on 85 at rush hour!

A crash on anything is a crash... I got 3 friends off the top of my head I can think of that gave me crap for my crash spree that first year and they all went on to have multiple crashes each. One made fun of me and went out and crashed after the checkered flag in T1.... this after he crashed a few weekends before that also...which made his 3rd or 4th after teasing me. karma is not a nice girl....
I crashed 6-8 times my first year...which wasn't even a full season! Last year I had one crash but that was due to a guy literally pushing me off track as I was overtaking him for first place.... This year things are good so far...(knocking on wood!)
