well tanning is bad for your health mmmckkayyyy......
actually....it has many health benefits
Most of us start smiling when the sun comes out, so it's no surprise that a little sunshine everyday can boost your mood and also help prevent and/or help serious ailments.
For years we have been told to cover up in the sun to cut the risk of getting skin cancer. But know it has come to light that sun is actually good for the body.
Recent studies have shown that a sensible amount of UV light reduces your risk of several cancers and health conditions. It's all thanks to Vitamin D, which is made through our bodies through the action of UVB rays on our skin.
Professor Michael Holick of Boston University School of Medicine is the author of "The UV Advantage" book. "We get about 90 to 95% of our vitamin D from the sun," says Holick.
He advises people should get 5 to 15 minutes of sun exposure three times a week to boost vitamin D levels.
Here are the top 10 ways in which the sun can IMPROVE your health:
1. It cheers you up.
Sunshine boosts levels of serotonin-the body's natural "happy hormone" That's why we tend to feel more energetic when the sun shines. Regular sun can ward off moderate depression.
2. Reduces heart disease.
A study in the British Medical Journal showed that people in the UK are more likely to die of heart disease in winter than summer, which is believed to be caused by lower levels of vitamin d, or UV light during those months. It also depends where you live. Blackpool, England has 27% more hours of sunshine every year than Burnley, England. There are 9% fewer deaths in Blackpool from coronary heart disease every year.
3. Helps prevent diabetes
Vitamin D may help prevent the onset of diabetes according to a study in Finland. The study showed that children who were given a vitamin D supplement for several years had an 80% lower risk of developing Type I diabetes.
4. Beats SAD
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is depression specifically caused by lack of sunlight. Tanning or light therapy is used to treat people with low to moderate SAD.
5. Helps prevent MS
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system, leading to tremors & even paralysis. While the cause is not known, scientists have noted that exposure to sunlight in childhood appears to dramatically reduce the risk of developing MS. They have also discovered that the occurrence of MS is especially low in countries that have more sunlight per year.
6. Prevents Cavities
The sun could help keep your teeth strong. A dental study found the prevalence of cavities was greater in children from Scotland than in Wales. The only striking difference is Wales has an average of more sunshine each year.
7. Relieves aches & pains
Being out in the sun helps to warm the body's muscles & ease stiffness, which reduces the pain caused by inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
8. Reduces risk of cancers
Although overexposure to the sun can increase your chance of skin cancer, vitamin D provided by sunlight can actually help significantly reduce risk of other types of cancer.
A study carried out by the US National Cancer Institute found that people exposed to high levels of sunlight were less likely to die from breast & colon cancer. A similar effect was seen in bladder, esophagus and stomach cancers.
9. Gives you more energy.
Melatonin is produced by UV rays. It is a chemical that regulates sleep, so having lower levels of this hormone in your body gives you more energy. This is why in summer; people need less sleep than usual, but still feel livelier.
10. Helps skin conditions
Exposure to the sun can help heal conditions such as psoriasis, acne and eczema. Regular controlled exposure is often prescribed for sufferers of these ailments.
NEVER overdo the sun. Excessive burning & overexposure can increase your risk of skin cancer. It's all about moderation. Vitamin D is produced by UV light, whether natural or produced by tanning lamps.

I wonder how they're going to work out the tax for people who spend too much time in the sun and have more of a chance of getting cancer?
Sometimes politicians are stupid enough to even surprise me and I start off pretty damn pessimistic...

Next thing you know they'll be putting a bigger tax on wife beaters.
I'm sure the "Jersey Shore" crowd is up in arms!

They included that because they knew that the group that will be hit by it is not likely to mount a vocal protest, not because of any health connection. If they wanted to tax people for things that cost us on health care they'd tax cigarettes to the moon, motorcycles, ice cream - with special extra taxes on the really good ice cream because the goodness of ice cream is directly related to the amount of fat in it, you name it. If it has negative health consequences, they could tax it. Except too many people smoke and the tobacco lobby is too influential. Motorcycles even have a loud and active political lobby (AMA). And everybody loves ice cream. But tanners tend to be reluctant to even admit they do it, much less mount a vocal protest about it.

You take a chance every morning when you get out of bed. I propose a wake up tax.

Interesting tid-bits. I was speaking more in generalities.

They already tax smokes to the moon. NYC is outlawing fat and soon to be outlawing cooking with salt. There are some really messed up pols and supporters out there.

Take it away George.....
Let me tell you
How it will be.
There's one for you,
Nineteen for me,
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Should five percent
Appear too small,
Be thankful I don't
Take it all.
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
If you drive a car,
I'll tax the street.
If you drive to city,
I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold,
I'll tax the heat.
If you take a walk,
I'll tax your feet.
Taxman!
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Don't ask me what I want it for,
(Uh-uh, Mr. Wilson.)
If you don't want to pay some more.
(Uh-uh, Mr. Heath.)
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
And my advice to
Those who die.
(Taxman!)
Declare the pennies
On your eyes.
(Taxman!)
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman,
And you're working for no one but me.
(Taxman!)

Not that I will ever pay a dime for this because any person that hits the tanning salon is a moron...especially men...
It's nothing more than small business tax that's a pass through to vain females, body builders in speedos and nancy boys.
Being west coast born and bred it still astonishs me how many tanning salones there are in metro Atlanta when this place is supposed to be the sun belt. Within a 10 mile radius of my house I bet there are at least 50 strip plaza tanning salons (next to the nail salon and dry cleaners).

LMAO. I guess I am a moron and a nancy boy. My speedo makes my junk look bigger. I tan a couple times a week after working out. I am far far from a body builder. I actually find it very stress relieving and relaxing...
