I obtained an item from someone on another board via trade. It turns out the item I got was stolen. I'm currently trying to get it back to the original owner.
Do I narc on him? The item new was about $350. I'm thinking I should, what say you?

I doubt you're going to get your stuff back. Might as well keep it now.
yep. narc'em out. Thieves suck. If it was YOUR shit that was stolen, would you wanna know? Im STILL amazed at how people seem to think people that steal shit (whether its from a bank or from an individual) think that thieves are "scum of the earth", unless its someone you know..........THEN it seems its ok.
I would contact the original owner if you know who it is. Then file a police report and narc on who you got it from.

More details please.
It's something that is much more useful if you register it. When I tried, I found out it's registered to someone else. When they were contacted and asked to un-register it, they informed the manufacturer that it was stolen. I have asked the manufacturer how I can return it to the rightful owner.
The thief should be punished, no doubt. However, if the original owner was reimbursed via an insurance claim, if he gets it back and doesn't pay his insurance company back, it's insurance fraud. In that case, his insurer should get the item.
Also, I don't know if the guy I traded with is the one who stole it. Since he won't return my emails, however, I suspect he at least knew it was hot. I have his name and home address, so it shouldn't be a problem to nail him. I have to keep in mind he has my name & address also, and I don't know if he's unstable enough to be a threat.
Theft by receiving is still theft. Don't be the one holding the bag. Narc em out.

What Gmoney said. If you know it's stolen and you keep it and/or don't inform the authorities or at least the rightful owner of where you got it, you're not much better than the thief. I understand that the person you got it from may not have been the thief. He will have the opportunity to say where HE got it.
