looks like its not gonna be alot of people there on friday. I took off work just for this purpose. Saturday will probably be packed.
Yea, I've been watching alot of videos and picking out trees to see how to get through the blind turn. It'll be better when I ride it, but the videos help.

There usually are plenty of good markings on the track itself. You'll get used it quickly.
I don't understand why all the orgs stopped putting out those small cones during at least the first couple of sessions or till lunch.

The hardest part of RA in my opinion is going under the bridge on new turn 12 what I would do is point the bike at the red square and go it would always put me on the race line.

Yes and Yes... I plan on buzzing some CR's and making them cry.... f'%*&ing posers...
Hope I make it through the weekend without getting in too much trouble! Last time with Nesba I got bumped from Beginner to Advanced in 2 sessions... It's on now!
Ehh, not ALL their CR's are posers. As with any "big" org., youre gonna have a few CR's that think theyre hot shit, but there are a few of them that i'd almost bet a paycheck could smoke your ass out there. :D

We shall see... I've met exactly 3 good CR's with Nesba thus far... the rest were dicks that had their little clique and bashed on racers....
and as far as smoking my ass... I'm going there looking for a 1.31 while already at a 1.34 so we will be happy to find someone that's much faster then me to learn from... Figure it won't be till Opie shows up that I'll find that though... :D

laptime wise... would you say the nesba layout without the chicane is about the same as wera with the chicane? or less then 1/2 second difference? Obviously thats assuming you can roll through the chicane at a descent click....
Sweet, can't wait to catch this action. Wonder if Derek is coming out to play?
Honestly, I don't know of any of the CRs that bash on racers. A good portion of the CRs are racers and love riding and racing. I don't race, but that is because I will not put on the big boy pants and tell my wife I want to race. Most of the CRs are pretty quick and run mid to upper WERA expert pace. I am not one of the quick ones, but I am not a slouch around the track.
Nikk, sorry you had a bad experience with NESBA. Hopefully you will enjoy your time at Road Atlanta in October and give us another chance in the future. Honestly I would like to know what we did to upset you and caused you to form your opinions about us. Feedback whether bad or good can be helpful.

Most racers say the lap times are faster with the AMA chicane. I would be slower with the chicane, but I have only ridden that layout one time. I remember Dave saying the exit of the chicane allows for a much faster entry and better line into the esses. It may be 1/2 second faster, but Dave should be able to answer this more accurately since he runs both configurations a good bit.
Cool, what are their names and bikes so I can find them and name drop you?
Road Atlanta is one of the best tracks in the South and probably the US. It has every feature a race track should have: elevation changes, blind turns, chicanes, sweepers, bus stops, and all at blazing speeds. You are going to love it. Look me up on Friday (Yellow and Black 09 GSX-R750 #29). I will be happy to pull you around and show you the line. What group are you riding in?
Hell, i dont know who the CR's were when i was there this past summer testing the new R1, but i had zero problems with them (3 different ones). We told them who we were, that not only were the 3 of us experts with WERA, but also Ed Bargy instructors, and the reason we were testing the R1 was to see just what the bike had to offer, and going SLOW was not what we were there to do. Even tho we couldnt get out in the advanced group, they took us out in I group, and no matter how hard the CR tried, everytime he looked back, i was about a foot off his rear tire. I think we lapped the entire I field about 3 times in one session. He finally waved us by at the end of the session (i think i personally did either 4 or 5 sessions out there that day and had 3 different CR's). I never got any attitude from any of them, and of course, i also know Dave and Shane (Dave is a stand up guy and can corner pretty damn low), but both of these guys are two of the nicest guys ive ever met. Im curious too, Nikk, as to what caused you to have the type of experience with them that you did.
Edit: I did have one CR "scold" me when we came back in after one session. We came out of T5, hammer down, nose in the air, me again, a foot off his rear tire, and as we came into T6, we came up on about 6 I group riders, and we came up on them SUPER fast, he got on the brakes HARD, and with me being as close as i was behind him, had no choice but to pull out and go to the outside and pass him and all the I guys thru 6. It took him all the way to T10 to catch and pass me on the brakes (i was braking EARRRRRLY for 10 on stock pads/lines and GPA fronts). He made the pass, patted the back of his helmet and we finished the session. Once we came in, he advised me i was to stay behind him at all times, and was very nice about it, no attitude at all. And when i informed him it was ass pack him or go around, that i opted the safer route, he understood and all was good. Next session out is when we turned it up even more.
Personally, i think the ones that have a problem with the CR's, typically go at the CR's with attitude first, and to be quite honest, having been doing this for the last almost 7 years, if you come to me with attitude, i'll be nice for about 2 minutes, then you'll get that attitude back, and if its a problem and i think your riding could be dangerous for the rest of the customers in your group, i'll have no problem asking you to pack your shit and go home. We're more concerned about the satisfaction and safety of the MAJORITY of the paying customer than we are about the one or two that occasionally show up thinking theyre the next Rossi and have the right to ride outside the rules.

Yeah, seems like 3/4 second faster with the AMA chicane. Doesn't seem like it should be, but it's pretty consistent.

Well... the short and sweet of it was the first time out with nesba when I first started trackdays, there was an issue with a bonehead rider that ran me off the road at over 100mph and I was basically told to deal with it....this after the guy had blew up his first bike in front of me and oiled the track after leaving the drain plug out.... yet I noticed a large # of people being sent home before lunch.... That didn't really do it for me though....
I went last year to a road atlanta date and was still in the beginner class. It was to be my first time out on the zx10. Anyone that knows me knows that I don't approach folks with attitude unless they have ticked me off and have it coming... I'm very laid back and easy going. I went up to the registration table in the morning to get signed in and asked if it was possible to go ahead and bump up to intermediate at least since I was a wera racer and had done 30 or more races...if not could I please have someone watch me to get the bump so that I didn't waste the day in B group. I was told by the director that for $50 he could have a "wera race" license and that meant nothing to him and I'd just have to get with someone to watch me, probably after lunch....
First session out was red flagged before the 1st lap was completed.... Went back out finally and lapped everyone in a lap or 2, about killed myself running into 10a with a parking lot waiting on me, hooked up with a CR and chased him around till my bike died.... got back to the pits and was hunting the CR cause he kept looking back at me so I figured he might bump me. Was told to go to the head CR who was a dick and gave me attitude when all I asked for was the CR with the particular bike/tail section... He gets into why I was looking for him so I explain that I was chasing him and wanting to bump up. He (with major dick attitude) tells me the only reason I was keeping up with this particular CR was because he was "letting" me and that I should forget it and just go ride in B group.
I finally find the CR who was from out west and a really nice guy(checkered undertail)...he actually took the time to go to the head CR and tell him to bump me which obviously pissed the head guy off cause after his lecture to me and then being proven wrong...he argued it a bit but then finally gave way as a "safety issue". So a lot of bullshit and attitude just to get to I group. So really, the head CR at that time and the director are where most of my dislike lie... DJ and David Brown...
Went out in I group and after coming in, another CR came over and explained that he saw me go by and tried to make chase but couldn't run me down and wondered if I was ready for A group cause I had the speed. I explained that I'd been through hell and half of Georgia already just getting to I so sure I'm ready but I wasn't sure if the dick of a head CR would allow it... he came back with my A stickers so he was the 3rd nice CR I met... Older fellow from NC I believe.
That's my story.... most of the stories of dislike/disgust that I've heard stem from the CR's and the bump process. I actually understand it and like the idea of having to qualify to move up....just don't make it like a power thing and become a dick about letting people move up.
Happy to give you the benefit of the doubt Stow...shouldn't be much of an issue now that I'm in A group and don't have to deal with the bump crap.
so sounds like your issue was with the director and the lead instructor, neither of which had any idea of just how you were riding that day since they personally hadnt seen you. And then all the actual CR's you dealt with, were good about giving you the bump up.
I dont read that as "all the CR's are posers and dickheads", i read that as "i had issues with management". And if what you say is true, i would have issues with that too, but since that was your first year doing trackdays and racing, thats been what, 3 years ago? Damned if i wouldnt at least give them a second chance to see if you got treated like that the next time out with them.
I know alot of folks that like NESBA more than any other org, and its usually the racers that like them more BECAUSE of the fact you have to "qualify" to bump up. It makes for a much more controlled and safer atmosphere on the track that way. If you sign up for advanced and are an expert racer, i doubt youre going to have any issues. I can see them being gun shy with "novice" racers, and ive seen quite a few novices that even tho they have a race license, still have no business in the advanced group, so i see where the lead guy is coming from with his "WERA license" comment. Hell, at the end of the Yamaha demo sessions, when i was talking to the head honcho ( i believe he was the head of NESBA) at the end of the day, we were just BS'ing and i told him ive been expert with WERA for 6 years now, and he asked why i didnt tell him that to begin with and he'd have let me take the R1 out in the advanced group. I told him had i known, i WOULD have! And i informed him if im able to make it to another one for the demo rides, i'll certainly look him up and let him know then.

the issue at road atlanta happened last year... 3 years ago I had just done my first trackday... Those were the "major" issues I had. Others include the overall attitude that I ran into with many other CR's that I dealt with each time out with the org.
In my experience, I've enjoyed my trackday time more with the org that shall not be named vs. Nesba. The atmosphere, the CR's, etc overall seemed more friendly, social, and helpful. Especially as a noob to trackdays. Thus why I chose not to bitch about it and just spend my money where I wanted.
Now Todd, you have an issue with an owner of a trackday org, who no longer own's that org yet you still disallow the mention of them and will not allow posting of their trackdays... so before suggesting that I'm judging many based on few, look in the mirror...

You don't select the group... you start out in beginner and stay there until Nesba moves you up to Intermediate and then when they move you to Advance...
You have the choice to signup in the Beginner or Intermediate group when you create your account. Once you have picked your group, you will have to be evaluated by a CR (Control Rider) in order to move up. You can log into your account and see what group you are signed up for. If you feel you are in the wrong group, then come talk to one of the CRs and we will get you evaluated for the next group. Also lining up at the front of the left line at pit out tells the CRs you are looking for a bump up to the next group.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to PM me or come by and say hello at the track.
Nikk,
Sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds like we got you in the right group in a timely manner. As far as the race license goes, it has to be an Expert license in order to get an automatic bump to the Advanced group. NESBA strongly believes in keeping riders in the appropriate groups. It is safer for the individual rider and the rest of the group if everyone is grouped according to skill. I will come by and say hello at the track. I hope you have a great weekend, and pick up some speed to carry over into the GNF.

So the question is.. if I was in Intermediate or Advanced (cant remember) the last time I rode w/ them, which was probably over 3 years ago.. whether they'll want to start me over again. I guess I'd be fine with hitting the Int. group the first time and then moving up, but to bump down to novice would be a bit annoying.. I'll keep the pit line thing in mind.. still not sure if I can fir this in yet tho..

If you have had a NESBA membership and were in Int or Adv, then you will remain there when you re-up your membership. You don't need to start over in B.

Me and a few of my friends are NESBA haters due to some issues that Nikk mentioned. Saying that, couple of the guys went to Barber with NESBA few weeks ago and were quite pleased. Apparently some guys that were the issue are gone now and the overall experience was good. Then again, we are all Expert licensed guys now so it takes the bump up process out of the equation.
The bump up process is a double edge sword. I don't think it's needed if the turnout is light, but if it's a busy trackday and you got "expert" guys running 10+ seconds off a decent novice race pace, things get quite dangerous. Some guys are simply unable to be objective about their riding level and they let their ego dictate what class they should run. I've had some pretty shitty experiences running trackdays that had riders who IMHO were not ready to be in the expert class, so the NESBA bump up process is welcome.

Pretty much, that's all...
Motor - stock
exhaust - full arrow system
Power commander - check
Air filter - stock
Tire - 200/55 ntec (big mofo)
Tune - Huffdaddy is the MAN
Hell, with all that, pump gas was 181hp, VP u4.4 was 186hp....but the MR12 is just insane apparently!!! I got some championships to win!!!
Just think, I could play the dyno game, put some 180/50 michelin takeoff on there and be close to 200hp or more.... can you hear my grin!!??

All in all was a great day though just a word to those going this weekend that weren't their today be careful with the apex of turn 10 (left hander at bottom of the hill) they have a new patch down that is still green (ie slick) it was coned after the first session so it may still be tomorrow but if not this is a heads up!
So whats going on with the inside of 10A? Was told it looked like they repaved/patched it, then ground it smooth. It was slick and sandy today. They eventually coned it off, but not before quite a few crashes.

I'll be out there Sunday, getting some seat time in for GNF. I'll be in Intermediate, but will probably try and get with a CR for a bump after the first session or 2.

Yeah, his name was Bryan Andrews... Turn 5, that is the left hander sa you go up the hill, past Ducati Island, right? Usually one of the slower turns as you exit the chicane... Yikes, I wouldn't have expected a fatal crash at that turn.

Yep...very odd place for something like that to happen. But that's the thing with our hobby, you just never know....RIP to Bryan.

That was a complete mess. First lap on the first session and I get slammed to the ground. Then two other riders get thrown down as well. Thank you Road Atlanta for the broken ribs and busted up bike. I can't believe the condition of the track and the pits. I hope AMP gets their act together and puts some pressure on Road Atlanta to clean up theirs. That place could be so much better than what it is. They have one of the best track layouts in the nation and some how they just don't get it or just don't care. Isn't there a Road Atlanta rep on this board?

So it was a broken rib? Wow, sorry to hear. Nice meeting you in person. Glad to say it was a better experience with Nesba aside from the sad events that occurred. I was worried at times about getting in trouble for excessive wheelies and passing too close though. Luckily no one called me on it....granted the passes were safe, just close sometimes and I tried everything to stop the wheelies cause they were slowing me down!
Heal up quick!

Yeah, a couple of fractured ribs but I will recover. I was just completely disappointed because I couldn't ride at the level I wanted to and honestly with the pain I just couldn't push through. I managed to get the CR sessions in and got to play around with some friends in the I and B groups, but my A sessions were terrible.
Glad you had a good time and didn't have any issues. Hopefully we met your expectations and you will ride with us again. And good luck with keeping that beast from lofting the front wheel. :D

Who was the guy on the blue r1? Him and luie were going at it for a session or two. I was in tow and just watching them fight back and forth. I think I saw him slide the rear into 10a a couple times even. Luie said that guy was quick and could run 29's? Them 2 and Geoff might have been faster then me.... :D
some how they just don't get it or just don't care. Isn't there a Road Atlanta rep on this board?you hit the nail on the head with that one. Motorcycle events are pretty much filler for them. Theyve proved it time and time again they dont give a shit about us.
There used to be one of their PR reps on the board, but the only time she ever showed up was to promote their events.

Other than the bad patch job and dirty paddock, Road Atlanta was awesome. I really like the layout and speed. Thats one fast track, for sure. Hope they get their stuff together and start making it more bike friendly, otherwise it seems like all the bikes will be enjoying AMP (if it ever gets completed) Thanks for the tows Shane. See you at Barber.

I posted over on the NESBA forum but also wanted to mention here: RIP to Bryan - I didn't know him, but from what I've read he was an awesome person - this is very sad. My thoughts are with everyone at NESBA, his friends and his family.
