A bill killing motorcycle "lane splitting" laws sits stalled in the Arizona legislature. It could have saved the lives of three motorcyclists killed in yesterday's horrific Phoenix crash caused by a careless dump truck driver.

Yeah, I like the idea of lane splitting by bikes in traffic congestion with stopped or very slow moving traffic...also like the French plan to educate drivers(all drivers I hope?). Maricopa Co. would be a good place to try it out, Phoenix traffic is pretty bad certain times of the day.

And brutally hot. I don't know if I would ride in traffic in the summer there without filtering.

While not legal, splitting is pretty much the norm there and looked over by LEO.
I don't think I ever sat in traffic while I lived there.

Yeah, 3 mos of the yr is brutally hot out there, 115 degrees for example. Not a good time to be on a bike.

Lived in CA for 3 years. Commuted on 2-wheels and safely lane split. Saved me an hour each way.
90+% of folks did it responsibly. It requires 100% focus at all times. It was great and I wish we had it here.

It stinks that this bill is stalled as we definitely need more states to start adapting similar legislature to get the ball rolling. I know this bill was only for 1 county, but it was a start.
Unfortunately, I think its going to take more tragic accidents like this one in AZ for people to realize that bikes sitting in stop & go traffic is more dangerous then riding between the cars or being in the front at a light with all that cushion behind you. I'd much rather take a glancing blow from someone changing lanes at a very slow speed vs getting sandwiched or drug under a truck like all these guys did.

I do it on I-85 all the time and even 316. So far never got cited or pulled over.
I think they seriously need to re-think that law.
After seeing that video of the French riders' protest, maybe we should organize one as well :)

Lane splitting should be made legal in GA as well. Regardless, I still do it. Beats sitting in traffic and watching the temp on the bike go up.

Lane splitting would be nice if it were legal here. That said.. if the idiot I saw passing all traffic on the left shoulder of I-75 between exits 269 and 271 then weaving in and out of cars as soon as traffic started moving a bit faster continues to ride like that it just makes all of us look like squid idiots and discourages lawmakers from trying to pass any legislation the riding community would like to see. BTW, if that rider is on here, not 5 minutes prior to when I saw them doing that my roommate drove through the area and there was a van on that shoulder, glad it was gone and the rider didn't go down running into the back of a stopped vehicle or trying to avoid it.
