View Full Version : Unions and Recess Appointments

Our exalted leader claims that "jobs are his number one priority", but had he spent even fifteen minutes working for a profit making enterprise in the private sector, he might begin to understand how destructive his policies are to economic growth. In addition to the threat of greater regulation and higher taxation, we now have the recess appointment of a rabidly pro-union member to the NLRB. Obama might as well replace the presidential seal with the AFL/CIO logo.
I've dealt with eleven labor unions as a manager, and if these are people who are inclined to support policies that will improve our economic well being, I'm Stevie Wonder.

I didn't think that there were any "low wage" federal employees these days. From what I've gleaned from several recent articles, position for position, the feds are paying significantly more than the private sector.

there's hundreds of thousands of low wage positions, gs11 and below, those are all union jobs

Here's a link to the federal salary tables. And the vast majority of the federal hires are below the GS-9 level.

I must be old fashioned, because $30-$40k doesn't strike me as "low wage". Admittedly, a UAW member wouldn't be willing to warm a bench for that kind of money, but when you consider the benefit package and what is essentially employment for life, it's still a pretty fat deal.

the benefit package is no better than a 401k now, and it's not employment for life, it's just a job like any other job
the entry level jobs are internships at around 20,000 $

It's interesting that you consider work outside of government as "the real world". At the rate that we're growing the federal employee roster, there won't be much "real world" left.

Given the current administration's commitment to the health of the union movement, I wouldn't be surprised if all government employees junior to Obama will have union cards before too long.

Probably is considered one now but has been in civil service for 25+ years. My father probably would have choked her if she joined a union.
